I need help with Safe Mode.
Hi Friends,
I'm not sure if I'm posting in the right forum, so please forgive me if I'm in the wrong place.
I have some possible security issues, and have been working with the support forum of the specific security program. They want me to run the scan in Safe Mode, and they tell me to hit F8 repeatedly as the system boots up, to get into Safe Mode. When I do that, I get a keyboard failure error screen. When I try to follow whatever instructions are given on the error screen, nothing happens. If I hit the keys given in the instructions, nothing happens, and it doesn't respond to mouse either. So I have to just shut down using the power button. I let it rest for a few moments, then power up again. As long as I don't touch the keyboard, the system boots up just fine (no keyboard failure). So I thought my Dell might somehow have a unique access to Safe Mode. However, searching through the Dell Knowledge Base, I find the same instructions -- hit F8 while the system boots up. But I've tried it 3 or 4 times now, and every time I get the keyboard failure error.
Several months ago, I was working on a similar security issue, and that support site (a different one) had given me instrutions for going into Safe Mode using Start > Run > type something > OK. If I could remember what to type, I think I will recognize the next screen that comes up, and I'll be ok on my own. However, I just can't remember what to type.
Can someone either tell me what to type, or otherwise what I need to do to get into Safe Mode? Thanks very much :-)

That would be GREAT to have Safe Mode on the Start menu!! Thank you SO much. I haven't tried to set it up yet, because, for starters, there's no "My Computer" on my Start menu. But I do know how to access My Computer from my desktop or control panel. So I haven't given up before trying it! I just want to get through this security issue first. But then I'll try it! Why don't they just make computers with Safe Mode installed on the Start menu, anyway?
Also thank you for the "msconfig" to access Safe Mode using Start > Run :-)
Meanwhile, should I be worried that the F8 technique gives me this keyboard failure error? I mean, the keyboard obviously works just fine; I'm just typing away here! But seriously, does it indicate another problem?
Thanks again -- many, many thanks!!
All best.

You may have gone to Start|Run, entered msconfig and clicked OK then checked the /SAFEBOOT option on the BOOT.INI tab. You can add Safe Mode to your start menu with the following procedure (from Windows XP Inside Out)
"1. Right-click My Computer on the Start menu and choose Properties.
2. On the Advanced tab, click the Settings button in the Startup And Recovery section.
3. In the Startup And Recovery dialog box, click the Edit button to open Boot.ini in Notepad.
4. Under [Operating Systems], select the entire line that contains the settings for your default operating system choice and copy it to the bottom of the list.
5. Append the following set of switches to the end of the newly copied line:
/safeboot:minimal /sos /bootlog
6. Change the description in quotation marks to "Windows XP Safe Mode" and then save the file."
