Anybody know what the i386 folder is for. It was pre-iinstalled and i do not have a clue as to what it is.   It's on My computer, local disk.  I can't find any information on the Dell site

granny64,

That folder contains all the files of Windows XP. If your system is set up to take advantage of it, you can run System File Checker and/or replace Windows files without using the CD. Go to Start|Run, enter regedit and click OK. Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion and see if the value for SourcePath in the right-pane is C:\. If not, you can change it if you choose. If you don't wish to use the feature, you can delete the folder and use the reinstallation CD for needed maintenance.

I do not have SourcePath listed.   I have Programs files, Device Path, Media Path and some others.  Could one of these be it?

granny65,

I apologize, the correct location is

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Setup.
