I8kfanGUI

This app works great on my laptop. I thought I'd try it on my XPS 410 (aka. Demension 9200) to see how it would hold up. It turned out ok reading one of my CPU's and the Hard Drive temp, but that's it. Is there a similar app out there geared for Desktops?

Ghotik,
The I8FanGui was designed specifically for the Dell Inspiron, Latitude, and Precision computers.  See this page for other systems supported:  http://www.diefer.de/i8kfan/index.html

Intel does not make its FanControl/QST available to end users.  It is only available to system integrators to optimize fan speeds in various chassis configurations.

However, take a look at Hmonitor :  http://www.hmonitor.com/

And also look at SpeedFan:  http://www.almico.com/speedfan.php

Hope this info helps.   If you play around with fan speeds, please be careful to avoid damage to your CPU.

Tony

Hi tgsmith, does Your answer also apply for an VOSTRO M 400? On my D820 I8kfanGUI works also very good. Last week I've got an VOSTRO M400 and I think the cpu-cooler is a little bit loudy durin system is idle, so I'd try to use I8kfanGUI. Looking for Information I found Your message. Thank You for Your comment.

Beutlinonline,

Although I have read a post or two where I8kfanGUI has been installed on a Vostro (1400), no one could come up with appropriate temperature settings.  I wouldn't recommend using it on a Vostro 400.  I8kfanGUI was designed for laptops; i.e., Inspiron 8000, not desktops. Vostro fan noise even when idling is a fairly common complaint. This leads me to believe that the system needs the cooling.  Upping the temperature settings could cause irreparable damage to the CPU and/or HD.  Doing so would void any warranty on your new system.   Please read the advice regarding temperature specifications on Page 22 of the Vostro 400 User's Manual:  It's available here:    http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/systems/vos400/EN/pdf/CR532A00MR.pdf

Hope this info helps.

Tony
