bseabrooke,

I attempted to do a search for IBM Write to determine if it might not be compatible with Windows XP but received no hits on a program by that name.

This sounds like the very old IBM wordprocessor program.  I remember seeing that on IBM machines back in the DOS/3.11 days.  There was also a version for the OS/2 systems.  It went away when IBM bought Lotus and also got the Lotus Wordprocessor program.

Yes, you're correct.  Given that I am trying to install it in WXP with the original diskettes, and that I've been using it with W98, I wonder why I'm receiving this message and can't install it on my new Dell 4700.

There is some software that is not XP compatible.  Especially many old DOS and Win 3.1/3.11 programs.  They work on older Operating Systems such as Win98 since the old operating sytems are DOS based and basically are just "graphical DOS systems".  However, Win XP is not DOS based and only has a limited DOS emulator.  Some older programs run fine and others don't.  There is also a compatibility mode in XP that will allow some older programs to run for example in Win98 compatibility mode but I personally have never found the compatibility mode to help - if the program wouldn't run in the native XP mode it wouldn't run in the compatibility mode.

However, I have loaded programs that Windows XP warned was not compatible, that I knew was, and ran the programs without problems.  If you want to do that, first set a System Restore point so you can recover in case the program causes XP operating system problems.

Actually, I recommend setting a manual System Restore point before installing any program or program update.  Some programs will set a System Restore point but just to be on the safe side.  It's save my b... several times.
