icon't display on Search

the little pix that used to accompany Search menus "For files, folders", "On the 'Net", etc., have suddenly vanished, leaving these depressing little black chasms ... Started shortly after using Home Publishing 2000  a bit more extensively, and recently, which often has a similar and disquieting effect of wiping out the icons in Quick Launch below when in use, but those return on restart.  Plenty of memory, 192 ram 'cos I put in an extra card long ago ... Ideas kindly?  Annoyed in SF  :o)
