IE not opening other html extensions

I am doing some web development and using SSI's, which require a different extension to the filename, to trigger the server to look for the include statements.
I have been using .stm -- but also tried .shtm and .shtml -- and all work okay on the server.
Problem is, IE on my computer will not open these files in browser!  Have to FTP to server to see results -- not good.
Using IE 6.0 on XP machine.
Do you know how to make IE recognize other file extensions?  Or is there something else I can do troubleshoot this problem and fix it?
Many thanks in advance,
--Paula

You're over my head; however, an excellent forum where webmasters/programmers "hang out" is here:

Likewise. Not familiar with server jargon. I can say that (XP SP2) IE 6.2 will load pages with those extensions. If you are asking a different question then I can't help you. (These links load for me.)
