I've checked http://support.microsoft.com/kb/308260 & followed their recommendations (check IE settings, delete tmp internet files). No change. Installed XP SP3. No change.
Re firefox, I need to check with BT if their BT Yahoo! Broadband icon can run under firefox.

quaker01, You could check IE7 tools>internet options>advanced>browsing - uncheck-display a notification
about every script error>apply.
Just one thing.
