I had the same issue; continue to have it. I have a inspirion laptop, XPS, and have done a fresh xp-sp2 install from scratch, and still get that problem. I still need to update my bios, hoping that will be the solution, but I'd definately check to see if that is available.
Has anyone identified the root cause of this problem? I recently upgraded to SP2 and this exact issue is occurring for what appears to be only products utilizing the Network such as IE, Windows Media Player. I just downloaded the lastest BIOS, Flash, and the NIC drivers however would like to know if anyone here has resolved this already before I begin to install these. I am able to ping addresses, and there are no reported problems with the NIC, thus I have to assume this is OS related perhaps corrupt Registry entry. thanks in advance !
Try updating your JVM- go to java.sun.com and download the latest (i think it's 5.0, update1) May help; I recall this being an issue with one of my machines after the sp2 patch
