IE6 SP1 update causes severe problems

Question

I just reformmated and reinstalled all my original applications into my Dell XPS R350 running W98. IE5 was included in my install and worked fine. But MS requires update to IE6 SP1 in order to allow me to get 'Critical Updates' so I downloaded IE6 SP1. This was a huge mistake! During the bootup, the PC hangs and I get 'Explorer caused invalid page fault in Explorer.exe...' This also prevents me from booting in Safe Mode! I reformatted and reinstalled evrything again and IE6 SP1 caused same problem. any ideas? Thanks.

I would install Win98. Then go to WindowsUpdate and install all updates for the OS, EXCEPT for anything dealing with IE.

REBOOT

Run Scandisk and defrag your hard drive.

Then go back to WindowsUpdate and select the IE and IE6 stuff.

Are you running 98 or 98SE? I installed IE6 SP1 on my 98SE machine and it went well without any problems. You should think about upgrading to 98SE.

This also happened to me (I run Windows 98SE) and I tried reinstalling windows 98 but still had the explorer.exe error.  I didn't want to format the disk so I eventually installed windows 2000 and have a dual boot system which worked so I now have access to my old files.  I still can't access them if I try to boot to windows 98 though.  Any suggestions for getting windows 98 back up?

My suggestion would be to get a copy of IE6 SP1 on a cd rather than download it from the Windows Update Site. Sometimes downloads can get corrupted.
