Ieplorer not closing down properly

Question

I am getting multiple copies of Iexplorer. It appears when I close the application down it does not fully close down. I go to the task manager and see multiple Ieplorer processes running, chewing up memory. Eventually I can not load anything new and either a reboot or if I am lucky I can go to Task manager and manually delete the processes.   Any ideas why this is happening and what I can do to fix it?   I am running Mcafee virus scan, WinXP home on a latitude D620 with 1gig of Ram   thanks
