IExplore.exe Application Error

Each time I log off internet, I get following message:

The instruction at "0x017f4ce0" referenced memory at "0x017f4ce0".  The memory could not be "read."  Click OK to terminate.

Any suggestions on how to get rid of this?  I've tried System Restore, as well as other suggestions made by Dell and Microsoft emails I've received.  Nothing is working.

Thanks!

I think you should repair IE

I had already tried both of your suggestions -- no luck.  I tried again since your email and still no luck.  In method one, it goes through a "Windows file protection.  Please wait while Windows verifies that all protected files are intact . . ." and that's it.  It ends and nothing else happens.

In Method two, I try to install ie.inf after finding it in search.  And then it tells me IExplore.exe - file not found.

The CD I'm using is:  Reinstallation CD, Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition, Including Service Pack 1.  Is that correct?

Thanks for any suggestions.

It has not found the file iexplorexe because on the XP CD it is in compressed form, ieplore.ex_.

Unfortunately, that may well be the case for other files that ie.inf wants to install. During a normal install, these files are expanded onto the hard drive before the inf files are called, so the inf file itself has copy commands rather than expand commands.

You might see whether you have iexplore.exe in C:\Windows\System32\dllcache (that's a backup folder in which many system files are stored). If so, when ie.inf asks for the CD, there should be an option to browse to that folder and let it find the files it needs there. Otherwise you can expand manually. With the XPCD in the drive, click start, run, type

expand X:\I386\iexplore.ex_ C:\folder path where you want to put it\iexplore.exe

click OK.

[note spaces between d and X and between _ and C]. Replace X by the drive letter of the CD drive that has the disk in it. I assume your system is on C drive.C:\ folder path where you want to put it is any path you choose, for example C:\temp if you have that folder, or C:\windows\temp. Then when it asks, point ie.inf to that folder.
