I did further research and have tried so many things, it's a wonder anything works - at one point I even lost my spider game! I have reinstalled but I'll look for a repair.
If you want to throw it out the window, gimme your address, I'll get ready to catch.
Instead of removing IE, you should try reinstalling over the existing installation. Rerun IE installation, there's an option to "repair" (if I'm not mistaken). Click repair. Restart and repatch IE. Reinstall sometime helps.
Start from Add/Remove programs. Highlight IE, click Add/Remove. There should be an option "Repair Internet Explorer". HTH
Edit: My bad, WinXP SP2 doesn't not have an entry for IE in the Add/Remove programs. It comes with SP2 bundle. How about reinstalling SP2 (or install SP2 if you haven't done so)? I'm curious, have you made any changes (add/remove software?) before IE stopped working?
I did absolutely nothing - it worked Tuesday night, then didn't work on Wednesday morning. I suspect some virus or spy program or something equally fun. Anyway, I've removed, reinstalled, downloaded the SP2 package. Nothing works yet. I'll keep playing with it tonight, then tomorrow I'm going to take it over to the computer store and see what they can do - if anything. Pretty frustrating to say the least.

Thanks to both of you for your help.
