I do not see Hot Fix # Q328310 listed in my add/remove programs. So it seems that solutions 3 & 4 wouldn't apply?
I removed the Install Shield Engine Folder and then reinstalled the program in question. Still the same error.
I updated the Install Shield Engine then reinstalled the program in question. Still the same error.
Note: This was a new system build and all went fine until I started installing a few programs. Could it be a program I installed was for Windows ME and not XP that is causing this problem? Thanks. Now what.......................
I did that update and still the same. I noticed that the Install shield folder and all sub folders contained in it are read only. Should it be that way?
Can having installed a program that was not XP compatible cause this problem?
I have installed, uninstalled and then reinstalled this Rand McNally program 5 or 6 times now and still get this "ikernel.exe - Application error" message
The only thing I have not done on the list of solutions was to install the patch for Hot Fix # Q328310, the reason being is that I don't see this Hot Fix listed on my computers add/remove programs list.
I understand this but things are not going as they should.
The Install Shield Folder is checked Read Only but is greyed out as is all of the sub folders. If I remove the check from the Read Only box, apply, Ok and click off the folder and then come back to the folder the check is back in the box. I can't keep the check out of the Read Only box.
If the Install Shield Folder is deleted and then a program is installed the Install Shield Folder is recreated, is this correct?
"The iKernel.exe application error may occur if the InstallShield engine (iKernel.exe) or one of its component files in "\Program Files\Common Files\InstallShield\Engine" folder is damaged, corrupt, or has read-only permission. This error may also occur if the InstallShield engine (iKernel.exe) or one of its component files in folder "\Program Files\Common Files\InstallShield\Engine" was left on the system by an older version of the InstallShield program. This is incompatible with the current version of InstallShield used by the JRE installer."
I believe InstallShield is part of the program that you are trying to install. It probably checks to see if it is needed (ex. the installShield folder is not there). Just a guess. You could try renaming InstallShield temporarily and the try installing your program to see if it installs a new copy of itself.
You can try this in the mean time. Run cmd.exe which should give you a MS-DOS type command box. I don't know what it looks like or does because I'm using 98se. In that box run each of these three commands (copy/paste if possible). That should remove the read-only attribute from the files but not the folders.
These are the three folders in my 98 InstallShield folder. If yours are different, just replace driver with any folder that is different after running driver first.
I renamed the folder and installed the program in question again. A new Install Shield folder was created. Still the same problem. I'm the administrator for my OS. There is nothing I can do to change the greyed out check in the read only box of the Install Shield folder, It keeps coming back checked.
Of the few programs I had already installed this is the only program I had a problem with.
I have used 98, 98se, and ME since it first came out, all with no problems. Why people rave about XP is beyond me. As a user, I see no reason to change to XP unless it's required because of hardware of software.
1) Could there be something wrong with this program?
2) Why wont the check in the read only box stay unchecked, but yet I am able to delete the folder?
Note: I just noticed that I am unable to archive any folders, even folders that I create?
The only thing left that I can think of is disabling your anti-virus program as it might be trying to protect you against an intrusion. I would disable the AV, re-name the install shield folder again, and then try the install again. If that fails I would contact the software company and explain what has happened. According to InstallShield, their folder can be deleted after its use.
I did all that before my first post here. I have done all the normal things, that's what puzzles me. This dog just wont hunt. There is one more thing I'm going to try as suggested by JRosenfeld from another board. Thanks and sorry for taking up so much board space with this. I'm about ready to go behind the barn.......

This seems to describe your problem:
http://java.com/en/download/help/ikernel.jsp
See if solution #3 or #4 applies.

Only one thing left from that site. Under solution #2, line 3., did you try this link?

From the Java link:
"The iKernel.exe application error may occur if the InstallShield engine (iKernel.exe) or one of its component files in "\Program Files\Common Files\InstallShield\Engine" folder is damaged, corrupt, or has read-only permission. chuket,
Don't know, but I will look into it. As far as I know I'm the administrator of this desktop etc.
Is the Install Shield a part of the Windows OS, or is it part of programs loaded onto the system?
Thanks...............
