Index Dat File?

Under username/cookies I have a lot of cookies in there that I would like to delete, but this Index data file is also in there and wont let me delete them. It is bieng used by another program. I have looked everwhere for an answer but cannot find one. I have tried safe mode, and a dos command to delete data files, which deleted them except for this one. Can I move this to delete the cookies or what do I have to do? Also this index data file is not in TIF's folder. TIA   Ronnie

Hi:

I use the free utility Index.Dat Suite to remove most of those sneaky index.dat files-
and there are a lot of them. You can get it here: http://support.it-mate.co.uk/?mode=Products&p=index.datsuite

It not only empties those files (you can't really delete them, as they are re-created by Windows), but it also lets
you view the contents. You might be surprised to see just what is actually stored in the files.

Edit:
An easier way to simply clean those files, is described here: http://www.spywareinfo.com/articles/del_index.dat/

Just a suggestion. Right click on file and select properties. Make sure "read only box" is not checked. Also make sure you really want to delete it. I know there is one index .dat file in the PCHealth folder that should not be deleted since Dell Help & Support uses it.

joe53 I made a new user with ad privys and still could not delete that folder. I might try that utility, thanks.  Ronnie
