In my opinion - leave indexing turned on.

It takes some time when the computer is new (and when you install a new application) - BUT it makes searching SO........................... much faster. I really think it's worthwhile considering the small amount of time it occasionally takes.

As Rebel9 said, is so much easier to search files, I really like that new fwature. Maybe If you do not have 2Gb of RAM it could be better to turn it off, so you can compare.

I turned off the indexing. The results so far are a quicker login, a generally crisper response and greatly reduced disk activity. No downside so far.

I can't turn my indexing on. As a result, I can't search on contacts in Outlook. The app tells me that the search can't be completed because indexing isn't complete. I go to indexing and it says its idle, so to start desktop search. I do that, and the window in desktop search says to start desktop search! Any thoughts?

You should be able to search with or without indexing. Someone here may be able to help. You could also post on a microsoft support form.

Thanks. The actual sequence, when I put a search term in Outlook contacts, is:

1. An embedded dialogue box just under "Contacts (Search Results) says:

"Search results may be incomplete because items ae still being indexed. Click here for more details."

2. I click the dialogue box.

3. A separate Office Outlook dialogue box pops up that says:

"Outlook is currently indesxing your items.

Search results may be incomplete becaseu items are still being indexed.

1999 items remaining in "Personal Folders".

3020 items remaining across all open mailboxes"

Then I try indexing through the control panel, which leads to the Windows Desktop Search loop.

Is there a way to separate the Outlook searching problem from the Windows search?

Thanks,
Brian
