Inspiron 1520 - No updates & error messages, vista issues...
Hi guys,
Just joined the forum and need a little help. I've just bought an Inspiron 1520 from ebay, it has Vista 6.0 with SP1 and is about 2 years old. Every time is starts up an error message appears saying 'Location is not available F:\ (tried to upload a screen shot but it didn't work). It only arrived today, I'm wondering whether the last owner deleted some files he shouldn't have, although there are still a few of his documents around!? I've downloaded avast anti-virus and done a couple of scans getting rid of any viruses and removed a few programmes that the last owner installed. Here is a list of my current issues;
Error 1327: Invalid drive F: - this appears when I try to remove programmes, I have googled it and understand it to be a virus that prevent automatic updates (gaopdxgmrgcfrn.dll infected with win32:fasec [TRJ]) this explains why I can't get updates, but I have deleted this virus and updates are still not able to be downloaded?
Word -whenever I open a word doc I get a message saying 'Command cannot be performed because a dialogue box is open' And then behind that another box opens saying 'the office open XML file Normal.dotm cannot be opened because there are problems with the contents.
Start menu: when I try and select my docs or my pics from the start menu nothing happens, I didn't expect any documents to be in there, but I assumed you would able to open the empty folder? I have transfered some documents from a pen drive to the laptop but once the pen drive s removed the documents are no longer there?
Anyway, thats a few of the issues so far, I'm not massively clued up on computers, I've had three laptops and this is the first with vista so navigating my way round is a little slow at the moment. Any thoughts/suggestions would be hugely appreciated, please don't bombard me with techn-babble, lay terms would be great!

You are still infected.
Most of these infections involve a rootkit which hides folders, files and registry entries. Your typical antivirus can't cure it because windows doesnt see the folder with the infection. If you have internet access, try Malwarebytes anti malware (download.com) and see if that removes it. Otherwise, you may need to connect the hard drive to a clean PC. Scan your hard drive with your antivirus, windows defender, spybot search and destroy. The rootkit is visible from a clean machine.

Thanks for that, I downloaded malwarebytes and did a full scan, it picked up 30 odd infected files and deleted them. Since then I have been able to install all relevant updates, there were 26 of them so I guess it hasn't been used for some time! I'm going to run more scans today including windows defender and maybe avast again, some files are still not available like my documents, pictures etc and I still get the 'location not available F:\' message when I start the laptop. How would I go about connecting it up to a clean computer? Could I connect it to my other laptop? Would a clean install of vista be helpful, I don't have any backup disks but we do have another dell inspiron 1521 with disks, if there were the same, would that work?
Thanks again, much appreciated.
