Inspiron 600M and Windows Updates Issues

I have a client with an Inspiron 600M that after running a recent Windows Updates the system no longer responds to anything.  She is running XP Home  which is barely a step up from ME...  I have thoroughly checked her system for trojans, adware, spyware, malware, etc.  It is very clean.  Whenever you attempt to do anything (i.e., Open My Computer, Run Windows Explorer, Open Control Panel...), it takes forever to respond.  With Task Manager opened, ddwin.exe launches with everything we attempt to launch.  I have disabled Windows Error Reporting and it still launches whenever you attempt anything.  If you End Task on ddwin.exe, whatever you were attempting to do pops up.  Friday, I was able to get the system running again by performing a System Restore but apparently forgot to turn off Automatic Updates...she called me today and said, "It's happening again."

Any ideas?  Has anyone else expreienced such?  Thank you in advance for any suggestions.

"ddwin.exe" is apparently part of Dragon Dictate, a component of Dragon Naturally Speaking. It may be that the 600M's microphone is picking up "noise", and Dragon Dictate is attempting to make sense of it. Does muting the built-in microphone prevent the problem from happening?

You might also want to visit the Dragon Technical Support Web site and see if they can help.

Sorry, typo it's dwwin.exe.  And it's still doing it.  I'm back at the system and it's running fine.  But when I first arrived...there were multiple instances of IE and Outlook...killed dwwin.exe and nows it's O.K.

OK, that explains what you said about Windows Error Reporting, also known as Dr. Watson.

You might want to take a look at a huge long thread at Annoyances.org about problems with dwwin.exe. The gist of it is that NAV 2003 and certain input devices, coupled with SP1, are involved.

Another all too common reason for strange problems like this is spyware/malware. Download, install, update and run Ad-Aware and Spybot as described in the second link listed below. If you continue to experience problems, the next step is to download HijackThis, install it as described in the second link below, and submit a log to the good folks in the Virus Information and Removal board for review. Be sure to post the log in a new message, and describe the problem you're experiencing.
