You do NOT hae to be running XP to update your BIOS on the E1705,and not sure WHY the tech told you that?....You can update it by simply running it in windows state(which here on the forums most would not to as this method tends to turn it into a paperweight if it fails).I updated mine over 2 years ago in windows state running Vista.

1)Make sure you have a FULLY charged battery

2)make sure you do NOT interupt or prematurely turn off system during update

3)Make sure you keep both the battery and power adapter pluged in while updating.

FYI:If for any reason the system turns off, battery dies,or adapter comes unplugged the BIOS will fail and you WILL end up with a giant paperweight and will require a replacement MOBO to fix.
