Install IE8 Error

I have a Dell Dimension 9200 with Dells IE installed and running Vista.

When I try to upgrade to IE8 I get the error message "Setup cannot continue because a more recent version of Internet Explorer has been detected on this computer"

Any ideas how I can go about installing IE8?

First, it's not "Dell's Internet Explorer".  The I.E. that is supplied with a new PC is from Microsoft.

The error you are getting, doing a google search, says that you have I.E.8 Beta installed and that will have to be uninstalled before you can install the final I.E.8.

Yes but it was Microsofts IE with a Dell stamp on it "IE provided by Dell" or somesuch.

The solution is not as simple as you suggest.

1. If I follow Start >All Programs>Internet Explorer then all I get is an error message "Internet Explorer has stopped working"

2. If I follow Start> Control Panel> Programs and Features.> Uninstall then I find that Internet Explorer is missing from list

So I can't locate IE, run IE or uninstall IE. Are some remnants of my last IE stuck in the registry or somewhere?

Any further ideas?

It's still Microsoft Internet Explorer, just has the Dell name added to it.  "Branding"  is very common in the PC industry or with Internet Service Providers that supply their own software - they modify Internet Explorer to add their name to it.

Do a google search for that error, and look over the various "hits".

However, if you are getting "Internet Explorer has stopped working" just by going to what you list in #1 then there would appear to be major problems with your Operating System rather than just that I.E.8 will not install.  In that case it probably is going to take an Operating System "Repair" to get that fixed first.   See THIS
