install windows xp 36 hours and counting

Dimension 8300, ATI Radeon HD 2400 Series AGP

All external devices disconnected except cordless mouse and keyboard, and E228 Monitor

Ran diagnostics, all pass except for cd rom which I turned off in Bios so the computer would boot to Secondary drive CD-RW

Had to boot from CD (New from Dell with SP 3).  Has taken 36 hours so far.  Is it because I installed new Graphics card, since buying the computer?  Is hard drive crashing?  I stopped, checked Bios- when I stopped to check the Bios again 24 hours later I set CD rom to Auto instead of off, seemed to make no difference as booting to E: drive.

Computer worked normally, quick, no problems.  Re booted, the install continued basically where it had left off.  Have let it continue.  Each minute appears to mean an hour. I have a fan blowing on it to keep cool.  "24 minutes" to completion- 12 hours into "completing installation".

If anyone has ideas as to what is going on, I sure would appreciate it.   Thanks, Pamela                                               Edit:  Updated description 12:15 pm

Do you have all external devices disconnected except monitor, keyboard, mouse?

Have you run the diagnostics on the harddrive? Tap the F12 key at the dell splash screen. run the quick and then the longer extended tests.
