Installed & verified Sun Java2 RE, Windows Update still offers patch for Microsoft VM

I really don't have a clear understanding of this topic, but I thought installing Sun Java2 RE would replace the Microsoft VM component. Windows Update is still offering the 816093: Security Update Microsoft Virtual Machine (Microsoft VM) patch as a high-priority update for my system, so I don't really know if I did something wrong or whether this is normal.

I installed XP for the first time on my Inspiron 8100 this past Monday, updated to SP2 using the CD previously ordered from Microsoft, and updated with multiple post-SP2 security patches from the Windows Update site. I slipstreamed XPSP2 and reinstalled Wednesday, then slipstreamed 29 post-SP2 security patches and reinstalled from that CD on Friday.

I had installed Sun Java2 RE, but I don't recall if the MS Virtual Machine patch was installed on my earlier installations. It didn't show up in my Add/Remove Programs, but I probably should have used the "Review your update history" feature on Windows Update as a reference for downloading and slipstreaming security patches instead of my Add/Remove Programs. The MS VM patch is not removable, and it may have been installed without showing up there. I'm also having problems finding the file to download for installing off-line or slipstreaming, but that's another issue.

I should have taken better notes, but I'll go back and start over with the Dell OEM Windows XP SP0 CD if need be. It seems I use my computer more for learning how everything works than for any other application.

I thought I had also slipstreamed the latest version of the Windows Update or Installer software, but that didn't seem to be the case, or maybe I'm just confused, and the Windows Genuine Advantage Validation Tool doesn't seem to be available for download. I was going to continue on with slipstreaming more customized features, but I may need to retreat a few steps and see if this Java issue is consistent. This is the first XP installation on my notebook, though I've played with it some on other systems, and my first experience with slipstreaming. I'm sure to overlook the obvious.

Hi:

If Windows Updates is offering that patch for Microsoft's VM, then you likely have it installed. You can confirm this by Start>Run> and type wjview, which will also show you the version you have. Installing Sun's JRE does not replace the MS VM.

Thanks Joe.

Yes, I do have MS VM installed. I presumed it was included with XP by default, perhaps because of the age of my original Dell OEM XP CD. Maybe I can avoid the installation by selecting a custom installation of Windows or by using options within the nLite slipstreaming software. I'll have to check it out.
