Installing Device Drivers after Reformat and Reinstall

I need to reformat and reinstall Windows XP for a 5 year old Dimension 8200. It is my understanding that after I do this, I will have to reinstall the device drivers using the Drivers and Utilities cd. I am not sure how to do this. I have some questions. 1. All of my hardware is original from Dell. When I run the Drivers and Utilities cd, will it scan my computer and automatically create a list of the device drivers I need to install. I can then click the items in the list to install them? 2. When I put the cd in my disk drive, nothing happens. There is a program on the cd called, autorcd.exe. Am I supposed to click that to get things going? 3. Drivers are supposed to be installed in a certain order that begins with Desktop System Software and Chipset. Will I need to install Desktop System Software and Chipset drivers on my particular Dimension 8200 computer? If so, what are these drivers called? How will I know what they are when looking at the installation disk? 4. When I look in Device Manager, I see a category called "System devices". It has strange entries like "Intel(R) 82801BA LPC Interface Controller - 2440". Will this kind of stuff be automatically installed with XP? If not, how am I supposed to tell what drivers to use? 5. With my particular computer, do I pretty much just need to install some basic things like the video, sound, network card, printer, and modem drivers and I'm done? Or, are there other more complicated drivers I will have to somehow look up?

Much nicer and cleaner approach/response to mem78410 questions then I provided. My compliments to you.

Although I do not know where you see Microsoft website in my response.

RATZ, the Microsoft website support items won't help him if he's reinstalling device drivers from the Dell Tools and Dell Resource CDs. Nothing against what you posted, very useful info for anyone with Windows XP.

Mem- Here are some answers to your questions.

1. It will not scan the computer for capatible drivers. The drivers are already on the disc, so you'll have to look at which ones are for your model of Dell Dimension.

2. Autorcd.exe is the exe file to open to run the cd. The reason it is not auto running could be that you have Autorun turned off. Here's how to turn it back on in Windows XP: First, go to "My Computer", and right-click your cd-rom drive. Then click "Properties". Click the "Autoplay" tab, and click "Prompt me each time to choose an action". That should fix your auto play problem.

3. Device drivers don't neccessarily have to be installed in any order. Windows has a set of chipset drivers for most chipsets, so installing the chipset drivers from the Dell ResourceCD isn't required, but it is recommended. But you don't have to install them right away.

4. Those will be reinstalled by Windows. If you're using the original Dell OS Reinstallation cd or a Microsoft retail version, those drivers are installed automatically.

5. The device drivers for you sound, video, and network interface card (NIC) are on the Dell ResourceCD. The modem should have a seperate disc. The modem disc should have something on it that says 56K or V.9X on it just below the Dell title. The printer should also have a seperate disc. If you don't have the disc, then you may be able to download them on the internet from the makers of the printer. The monitor drivers, while not all that important, are also on a seperate disc.

I hope this helps clear up a few things.
