Kommodore,

No, that copy of XP is licensed for use only on the computer with which it was sold and when you replace the motherboard you are creating not only a new computer, but a non-Dell computer and Dell OEM copies of XP are keyed to a Dell BIOS so XP will probably not install.

Well, thats unfortunate. If I got an upgrade for xinxp home can I do a clean install? Becasue I have a Windows 98 os and the Second edition Updates disk that I bought a Long time ago. I read that you can install the upgrade on a fresh formatted drive so long as you have the original windows 98 disk. I hope that i don't have to go through the process of installing 98 with a FAT32 filesystem, and then having to convert it to NTFS. Can I do it from a clean install with the upgrade?

You don't need to install Win98. The drive can be unformated. Boot off of the XP upgrade CD and it will prompt you to insert the CD of a qualifying OS (in your cae: Win98) to validate that you qualify for the XP upgrade. Just remember to partition the HD (if needed) and to format the primary partition.

Yes . . you can perform a clean install with a Upgrade Version of XP . . early in the installaiton it will ask you to insert your Win98 disc to verify that you qualify for the upgrade, and then continue with the install of XP ( without installing 98 )

If you have not seen it . . This is a really good guide to installing XP on a Dell
