Installing Win XP Prof on Latitude D420 = BSOD
Hi all !
I am trying to install Windows XP Professional on a brand new Latitude D420 with no luck.
The machine boots up from my Win XP Installation CD, but after ~2 minutes, it shows a BSOD complaining about pci.sys.
The D420 was shipped with Win XP Home edition which cannot be used in our company domain, so I'm really stuck here.
Or doesn't the D420 allow me to install Win XP Prof. ?
I have installed Windows Xp Prof. on 8 other Laptops (although none of them a Dell) without any problem at all (IBM's, HP's and Fujitsu machines).
The Windows XP Prof. installation CD I am using is 100% legit disc that has never failed before (I even tried a backup copy of it with no luck either).
I also tried (for test purposes) with a Windows 2000 Prof. installation CD with the same result.
TIA,

2. Does the machine have a PCI-Express Graphics Card?
3. If you answered yes to either of the above you may want to try a Windows XP SP2 disk.
Some who have had this problem have resolved it by booting from the complete edition of Windows XP SP2 and installing XP.
Some have had success by turning of the PCI-Express card in the BIOS, installing XP SP1 then upgrading to SP2.
You may also try slipstreaming your XP SP1 disk.

Hmm... I'm trying to install a fresh Win XP copy, so at this point there is no Service Pack installed at all... After installing Win XP Prof, my domain server installs XP Service Pack 2 as soon as I have joined my office domain with the new PC.
Yes, the Intel945GMS seems to include a PCI-E Gfx adapter.
My original Microsoft Windows XP Prof. installation CD does not contain any Service Pack at all (yes, it's an old CD !:) And since it works 100% ok with all my other machines, I can't see any reason to have to make a special disk for just this Dell PC ?!
The BIOS doesn't have any feature allowing me to do that ;(
And I have not had any problems with this installation CD in configurations containing other PCE-E Gfx adapters at all...
So does this really mean that for a Dell Latitude G420 Laptop, I cannot use an original MS Windows XP Professional installation CD that works completely perfect for around 20 very different hardware configurations, both Laptop and Desktop PC's ? What makes it fail with Dell ?!
Does Dell have any information available to tell me what I need to include on my slipstreamed Win XP Pro installation disk ? I haven't found anything about this on the Dell support pages, but maybe it's buried too deep somewhere for me to find... :-)
Can Dell provide such a installation CD for me (that I can use with my company XP bulk license) ?

Explains slipstreaming. I don't think Dell addresses this.
