For starters, you've posted this on the Windows ME Operating System conference.  If you are indeed using Windows ME, there is no way you're going to be able to run anything lower than IE 5.5 on that system.  IE 5.5 is the lowest you can go (and that's woefully inadequate, from a security standpoint).

Secondly, when you visit a site that has a statement about it working best with/requiring IE version x.xx, that usually means that this is the minimum version required.  There are usually no restrictions on how much higher you can go, so if you currently have 5.5 or better installed, you should be all set.  Whatever you do though, don't try to install an older version of IE on a system running Windows ME, and to be quite candid, from a security standpoint, any machine accessing the internet should be running the most recent version of IE (v 6, SP-2) available.

If you have a recent version of IE (5.5 on up) installed and are experiencing problems at a particular website, it's not due to any fault on the part of your browser.  It's more than likely due to poor/unsafe coding of the site in question, and unless you can get the site operator to get things fixed, you're probably going to be much better off avoiding the site completely.  It sounds to me like the site is way behind the times, and if they can't get at least the basic requirements current, there's probably not going to be much content worth spending any time with there.

Thank you much for the reply.  Yes I am using Windows ME.  I thought that was a strange warning message that I got while logging into that website.  I will call the website people about it but the message was from Netscape.  It is a website that I will need to use frequently.  Thank you again for your assistance.

Carol;

Have you visited the site and reviewed it for functionality?  Unless it's a secure site for online financial transactions, etc., you shouldn't have any problem working with it, but you may want to visit Windows Update (Tools - Windows Update, via Internet Explorer) and make sure you've installed any available Critical updates, if it is a site through which you must enter personal information, as Critical Updates address any security flaws that may have been discovered in your current browser version.  All things being equal, I think I'd opt for installing Internet Explorer 6 SP-2, if you haven't done so already, as that's going to be the safest version available.

I did the updates earlier this week and I checked updates on IE this afternoon and all was well.  I have been using Netscape but maybe it's time to change to the latest Internet Explorer, which is a nuisance to do.  I will check with my broker on Tuesday, maybe someone there has a clue.  I can get into their website, I just can't access my account.  Maybe their coding is a bit off. Now I have a very small problem.  I copied Progress 4.01 onto a disk and tried to run that.  Now when I boot up the A drive keeps buzzing for the disk.  That file is on c:\\windows\temp and I checked the date of the 5 files--they are 1999.  I suppose that is the date of 4.01 which I believe I can delete those 5 documents.  Is that correct?   Thanks for your help.  Carol

Looking back at your original post, I'm quoting verbatin: "I am trying to use a website that requires Internet Explorer 4.01.  I have downloaded it to drive A.  It is a winzip file called Progress.exe"

Is this "Progress.exe" the version of IE 4.01 you downloaded, or is it some other application?  If it's IE4.01 (although I can't imagine why it would be referred to as "Progress") you can delete all those files, and probably should do so, to prevent anyone from inadvertently trying to run an outdated (and probably completely incompatible) version of IE on your system.

If this is indeed IE 4.01 and you've already tried to install this but weren't able to complete the job, you might want to look for a folder by the same name in Windows Explorer (possibly C:\Progress, or possibly C:\IE4 (either may alternatively appear in C:\Program Files\Progress or IE4) and delete those files from there.  Worst case scenario, you may have to use System Restore to roll back to a point prior to when you tried to run this application.  If, on the other hand, "Progress" is a completely different application from IE, does it appear in your Program listing?  Does it appear in Add/Remove Programs?  Does it start from the Program list?  If so, it's installed, and you can delete any reference to it in the temp folder.  Use Disk Cleanup with all the boxes except "Temporary PC Health Files" checked to do this.  I think I'd want to know a bit more about what Progress is, and whether it's even compatible with contemporary operating systems (and most significantly, IE 5.5 or newer, as, in all likelihood, you're going to need at least that, rather than Netscape to access this site reliably) before I'd try doing much with it.  Can you point me to the site that requires this, so I can see what you're referring to for myself?

If all of this has you thoroughly flummoxed at this point, feel free to send me a private message by clicking on my name in this post and choosing "Send this user a private message," and we'll go from there.

I suspect the website you want to access requires a minimum of IE 4.01. Any website that must be viewed using only IE 4 would have been off-line years ago.

I was able to access my account today in a strange procedure which I won't go into.  I'll see if that procedure continues.  I think the company was just slow in getting my account up.

I thank you both for your wonderful assistance;  but i'm sorry to take up so much of your time when in the end it was unnecessary.  I'll not rush to the support desk so soon next time.  But I did learn new things about versions of a program.  Thanks again.
