Installing XP over Windows 98

I made the mistake of trying to install XP over 98 and the installation locks up during the installation process with the message "39 minutes" left.  I was advised that if the installation disk for XP had a SP1 that it was a recognized problem.  My version of XP is 2002 and has SP3 included.  I should have repartitioned the hard drive and started fresh but did not.  How do I proceed with the installation?  It is a old back up Dimension XPS R400 and I have removed all the files of interest. It is a Pentium ii and has plenty of memory.   Is there a way to wipe off the old and start with the new at this juncture? Should I use the Systems Tools disk that came with the computer? I am no wizard with doing this type of installation so be detailed and kind in your response and I thank you in advance for your suggestions and guidance.

Thank you,

jebpet

How much RAM and how big of a hard drive do you have on this PC? Does it even meet the minimum system requirements for XP ????

If you do manage to get XP installed, it will CRAWL.

Isn't it time, you thought about a new PC?

I replied and have not heard back from you. PLEASE let me know my next action to take to get XP loaded. I will attach the last reply again for your reference: The system is the following: All Pentium II 400 MHz with 512 MB Cache System Memory 384 MB Bios 4S4 EBOX 1. 10A.0028 I believe the hard drive is 14 GB This is what I call my garage computer and I have a Dimension 4700 in my home office which I am considering upgrading. I am also purchasing a new Dell Vostro 15” Laptop for my travels to replace my existing Latitude D520 with The reason for the upgrade to my “garage” computer is that I installed a Belkin 54 wireless modem and it requires a minimum of Windows 98 se and since I had an unused version of XP Professional I thought I would install it instead of an upgrade to 98 se. I use this one for some back up and entertainment. jebpet

Well, 400MHz P2 is going to be super slow with Windows XP.

Windows 2000 is barely acceptable on a 1GHz P3.
