Intel graphics

Hi, I'm not sure this topic fits here, but it seems that my Intel Extreme Graphics did an update without my consent or knowledge. I currently have Intel(R) 82865G Graphics Controller Driver Version:  6.14.10.4396. But I believe I had 82845G prior to yesterday. The console looks totally different than it did, and I can only change the brightness and contrast from within the Intel properties. I can no longer make those changes in the Windows Display properties.

My question is, can I uninstall this version and go back to the 82845G without any problems?

Not sure these are relevant, but I discovered and fixed the vundo malware yesterday and allowed Windows to update. After the updates were installed, I noticed the changed graphics driver and inability to do a system restore, so I removed the updates. Would removing updates affect the computer in anyway?

Thanks in advance for any help you can give me!
PS, I used VundoFix to get rid of the malware.

The 82845 and 82865 are chip sets; which you have depends on the computer you have.  If you use the 82865 driver on the 82845 chipset, you may have unusual display effects.  If you are certain that the 82845 is the chipset you have, you should uninstall the 82865 driver and reinstall the driver for the 82845.

Thank you for responding.

In the device manager, under display adapters:

Intel(R) 82865G Graphics Controller

So, that means it is indeed 82865. What could have happened to

change the Extreme Graphics program? I don't like the newer

program or it's functions.

And I was able to change brightness/contrast from within the

regular windows display properties in the control panel, but

can't now. Can I somehow go back to the way things were?

Thanks!

If you are sure that you need 82845G graphics controller, you can download it from here:

Sorry, but I don't think that I could help you with trhat. I'm not familiar with extreme graphics. Maybe someone else will know.

Thanks, but now I think the problem is that the Extreme Graphics upgraded to Extreme graphics 2 without my knowledge.

I've saved a screenshot of what the Extreme Graphics tab in the display properties looks like (from Intel support link) and also a screen shot of the current Ext. Graph. 2 I now have.

Is there a way I can get that to you?

Maybe if you see it, you might be able to tell me what went wrong.

Let me know if it's possible to send you a JPG.

Thanks!

Please let us know what computer you have.  You cannot upgrade to Extreme Graphics 2 unknowingly.  This is not a software change.  The device manager will tell you that it is the 82865 because that is what the driver tells it.  Device manager does not read the hardware itself.  You need to look at the documentation for your computer to determine which chip set is actually in your computer, or go to the Intel web site, do a search for chipset id, and load a utility that finds out what chip set you have.

According to your user's guide, found here:

You have an 82865GV chip set, and that is the driver you should be using.  Perhaps earlier versions of the machine have the 82845.  Drivers for your machine can be found here:

I notice that there is only one driver for the 865GV; the other three are for the various versions of the 845 chip set.

Happy computing!

I have a Dell 3000 w/XP.

If the program didn't upgrade, something mysterious must have happened to change

the way the program's control panel looks and functions.

A lot of changes took place in the computer that day.

Thanks for your help, but I'm just going to leave this issue alone now.

I can deal with the current graphics settings.

Thanks again.
