Intermittent System Pauses - What's Causing This?
Yesterday, my Inspiron 5150 (which runs Windows XP, and has 512 MB ram, in case this information is of any help) started doing something it's never done before - intermittently (about once every 5 minutes), it would pause, or 'freeze' for a split second. The way I knew this because I had Windows Media Player running, and the music, along with my mouse, would freeze for a quick moment.
I opened Windows Task Manager, and looked at the running processes, and these were the programs using the most memory -
firefox.exe ~ 52,000K
explorer.exe ~ 10,000K
NotifyAlert.exe ~ 13,000K
svhost.exe ~ 23,000K
CCAPP.EXE ~ 14,000K
Also, when my system 'pauses,' I have noticed that the CPU usage spikes significantly. Normally, it runs at in between 10 - 40%, but during the pauses, it spikes to anywhere from 75% to 100%
I'm not seriously concerned about this, but it is a major annoyance. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Process File: notifyalert or notifyalert.exe
Process Name: Dell Notifier
Description: notifyalert.exe is a process belonging to Dell support which notifies you regarding critical updates from Dell whenever applicable. This is a non-essential process. Disabling or enabling this is down to user preference.
-------------
Try to disable it.

Also, please check the Event Viewer (Start -> Settings -> Control Panel -> Administrative Tools -> Event Viewer) for possible errors/events that occurred during system stops (each event has a time stamp).
The behavior you describe may be caused by number of thing: Hardware malfunction, Indexing, System Restore, Windows/other programs automatic updates, synchronization, malicious software, etc.

And the error may indicate a problem with scanners and digital cameras (via USB, SCSI, and IEEE 1394).

If the stops happen (literally) every 5 minutes, try to:
1. Unplug all peripherals (except monitor, keyboard and mouse) and test with basic applications (Word, e-mail, etc.) for 10 – 15 minutes.
2. Restart in Safe Mode and test with basic applications for 10 – 15 minutes.
