Internal error during upgrade

I need help! Okay here's what I did.

I have reformatted the same computer before and didn't have a single problem. But now I can't even reupgrade to service pack 2.

I tried the windows update route and the XP sp2 CD to no available. Both showed "An internal error occurred". There's no error number or whatever, just that message. It is connected to the internet now though.

I would like to reinstall every program I need but almost everything wanted that Xp service pack 2!

I looked into the device manager and here's the yellow question marked devices:
*Multimedia Audio Controller
*SM Bus Controller
*USB Device
I am not sure if those are related to my problem.

Problem computer:
DELL Dimension 4550 Intel Pentium 4 2.40GHz
Windows XP Home Edition Version 2002 Service Pack 1

What you are needing to do at this point is to reload your system software and drivers as per THIS LINK.

You can find the software and drivers for your system HERE

If you have an older Drivers disk from Dell that was pre SP2 the drivers on there might not be the most current.

okay...

I downloaded everything on Dell drivers website and it didn't work. Same 'ol "An internal error occured"

What I noticed was, during installing sp2, the error show up right after on "checking product key" progress.

The disk you are using is this the orginal disk that came with the system.

yes. the cd is what came with the comp... right now I am reinstalling it again to see if I missed something.  If that didn't work out, I might try linux which I hope is compatible on that comp hahahahahhahaha

Yes, it is compatible with linux.

What I would recommend is to install Windows from the OS installation CD, then load the latest Dell drivers (from teh support site, preferably, from the Resource CD if necessary) and then try installing the WIndows XP service pack.
