Hi,

You might just want to try this.  From Start, Control Panel,Add/Remove Programs, Install/Uninstall, Microsoft Internet Explorer 6 and Internet Tools (or however your entry reads), Repair Internet Explorer, OK.

Thanks Jim, but I am a little confused here. I undersood that you cannot install/uninstall IE in the win98 OS. The only way to do that is a clean install of the whole windows system. That's what I have thought all along.

Maybe I have tried to provide to much info to get help. So;

What does the "Invalid page fault in module shell32.DLL @0187:66801af2" suggest to you.

I cannot open  IE6 without getting that string of warnings I gave in my opening post. I cannot even open "Windows Updates."

Additionally, there are no errors listed when I run "Scanreg.exe."

What Jim is advising you to do is REPAIR Internet Explorer...this will appear as one of three options when you select "Remove" in your Add and Remove Programs applet.

Thanks Dan for jumping in here. This one was throwing me.

First, I got my explorer bar back, but there was an added step in the process. The first time the add/remove utility listed "Internet Explorer Q????? number. I removed it but got the option to replace it with an earlier version. I did. This gave me an old page fault *NAVAPW32 in kernal32.DLL* I knew how to deal with that one so I went ahead and rebooted. I still had the "no access" problem.

Went back through the  install/remove program and now I list "Microsoft Internet Explorer SP1" which was a new update I just made a day ago.

I went through the removal process again and this time I had the option to repair. IE6, which I did. Everything is fine. If NAVPW32 becomes an issue again, I uninstall.Reinstall my virus protection as before.

Thanks  Jim & Don for steering me around this..

Hi...I've read your problem and it sounds similar to mine.
I cannot start IE at all.  What happened recently though is that I got three different viruses on my computer which were not repairable so I deleted the files.  One of them infected mslagent, so I left that one in quarantine (Norton Antivirus).  What is mslagent.dll anyway?

Anyhow, the thing is I tried the 'Repair' option under Add/Remove Programs already.  I was wondering if I could take care of this problem here or if I may have to contact Dell by phone.

I hope I could get a response soon since my use of this computer is until this Friday.

Thanks.

mic_luv,

You can find some information about mslagent here.

If you have tried the Repair option in IE and it did not correct the problem see if selecting the "Restore the previous Windows configuration" allows you to return to an earlier version of IE. (Depending on what version is presently installed, that option may be grayed-out and unavailable.) If you can revert, you can then operate with the older version or download a fresh copy of your current version.

If this does not work, you will proabably have to reinstall Windows to correct the problem. I seriously doubt whether Dell support will be able to assist with your problem (or that they will even offer to, unless you opt for paid support).

Thanks for you quick response Denny.  I'll try your suggestion and if it fails, I will reinstall Windows.

Mic, I repaired IE6 twice when it shut itself down. The third time I could not repair it, so I chose the option to return to my previous version 5.5. Though IE access and use is OK now, the rest of my system is slow , But I think that is various versions of spyware et.al. that I remove daily. Mostly tracking cookies. I use AdAware SE and Spybot for this purpose. . I too have Norton AV and come virus free that I'm aware

I think I'm ready for a clean install or a registry mechanic. You may also.

mslagent? I think Denny, (below your post) answered that for you. I don't know beyond that.

Any idea what this indicates?  Or should I just proceed to the last alternative...reinstall Windows?

Oh I forgot...cannot access my email on OE either.

This is the error:

The host 'pop3.norton.antivirus' could not be found.  Please verify that you have entered the server name correctly.  Acccount: .... Server:....  Socket Error: 11001, Error Number: 0x800CCC0D

This happened the same time as when IE failed.

Any ideas about this?
