Internet Explorer cannot connect to internet

I have a 1 year old dell inspiron e1505. I use it for school work and projects but other than that i don't use it to much. I went to update it on Wednesday and it cannot connect to the internet. Firefox works fine and my anti virus updates but IE just does not connect to websites. I clear the temp internet files and that fixes the issue for a couple minutes of IE use but it still does not fix windows update. I am at a loss here and you help would be great. I have also used both wifi and ethernet and they both have the same problem no matter what connection type i use. In a nutshell the computer connects to the internet but IE does not.

Have you tried disabling Internet Explorer Add-ons to see if perhaps one of the Add-ons you have installed is causing the problem  (In Internet Explorer go to Tools > Manage Add-ons > Enable or Disable Add-ons)

Have you checked your computer for malware/spyware with more than one antispyware program?

Judgement have you tried this,

1. Add the following Trusted Sites:
Start Internet Explorer.
On the Tools menu, click Internet Options.
Click the Security tab.
Click the Trusted sites icon.
Click the Sites button.
Clear the Require server verification (https:) for all sites in this zone check box.
Use the Add button next to the Add this Web site to the zone box to add the following sites:
http://*.update.microsoft.com
https://*.update.microsoft.com
http://download.windowsupdate.com

After adding the sites to the trusted sites the trusted sites list in IE i found that after a reboot they disappeared. I then ran another program and found that i indeed hd a malware infection. of some sort. It was a browser hijacker. I am not going to try to remove and just reformat the computer. Thanks for the help with my problem however
