Internet Explorer keeps using wrong address
Hi,
A problem started today that perplexes me. I use Sprint DSL with Earthlink, and my home page upon starting Internet explorer has been the Sprint-Earthlink page, etc. As of today, it goes to some generic page. When I go into control panel, change a setting, internet options, etc. it shows the home page address as "res://mshp.dll/index.html#22776" What is this?
I change it back to the sprint/earthlink home page which is http://earthlink.net/start and click on "apply" and OK and just about every combination I can think of. It keeps resetting back to the generic one.
How can I keep it on the earthlink one and have it stay there? I did nothing proactively to change anything in internet options prior to the problem. I do remove temp. internet files, cookies, etc. often per the gray box that features the homepage address change box, etc.
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks, Russ

It sounds like you have acquired a homepage hijacker. See the message from ChrisRLG at the top of the virus information and removal forum to remove this hijacker and any other spyware and internet parasites from your computer:

Hi Steve,
Thanks for the great advice. I have posted the "Hijackthis" scan in the virus posting board. I have a question; will installing a firewall stop the invasion of this type of problem on my computer?
Thanks, Russ

No, installing a firewall will not prevent you from spyware. internet parasites, or hijackers. Firewalls prevent unauthorized access to your computer. Spyware, parasites, and hijackers are installed with your permission, although some web sites that install this garbage find ways to trick you into giving your permission. See the following:
