Internet explorer - within-site links not working

Hello,

A certain type of advertisement has stopped working on my IE in the last day or two.  I would like these to show up, and for my IE to work properly.  I know it sounds crazy to want to see ads, but it's inconvenient when the IE back button won't work because of the failed attempts to pull these ads up fills it up (you have to push the back button several times to just go back one page).  Basically many websites now present with big white areas where these ads should be, saying 'the page cannot be displayed', etc.  Other than that everything is working fine.

I haven't been able to find anything like this happening to other people.  I googled a couple of the failed links from the IE back button pull down menu, and I think I discovered that this type of ad/link is called a backlink.

I ran Adaware (with update) and Spybot already - no fix.  I have also system restored to a time before this started happening.  I have also reset IE defaults in the tools > options > advanced menu - no fix.

I was infected with Navexcel toolbar (spyware) the other day, which I removed.  I don't know if this is related to my problem or not.

Any held would be much appreciated.

Ben

Perform a system restore to a time just before the problem started and this may fix this system. Would recommend that you test the system for spyware with adaware and spybot search and destroy.

Try a repair install of windows to cure the problem.

OneTrickDog,

Thanks for the suggestions.  Maybe you didn't notice from my post, but those were two of the first things I have already done - unfortunately they didn't fix the problem.

What next???

Thanks OneTrickDog,

I don't know what a repair install is yet, but I'll look it up and try it out.

Thanks again for the help, I'll let you know if it worked.

OneTrickDog,

I did the repair install and it unfortunately didn't work.  I'm still getting white boxes saying 'page could not be found' inside of news websites where large ads should be.  The rest of the news sites are showing up fine.  I don't know anything else to try.

Do you know of anything else I can do?

Thanks,

Ben

Beststarsign,

Thanks for the tips.  Actually my problem does not seem to be with viewing pictures.  But I really appreciate the help.

I'm no expert and I don't really understand this stuff, but my problem seems to be with other sites linked within a bigger site.  I think these are called backlinks, but I don't know.

For example, on http://slate.msn.com/ - I can't see the big ad that should be displayed on the middle right.  It says instead in that space: 'The page cannot be displayed.'

Same thing happens on http://www.knoxnews.com/kns/govols , where there should be a big ad in the middle right under where it says 'advertisement' that I can't see.  Same goes for two vertical ads on the far right of this page.

On both of these pages I can see all other pictures.

The really annoying thing about this is that my browser's failed attempts to link to these sites fill up my back button, if that makes any sense, and I have to hit it a few times to go back one page.

Thanks for the help,

Ben
