Internet Security Settings ??

Hello all,

This concerns the internet security settings as used in Windows XP Home SP2.

On the Internet Options Page, Security Tab, Restricted Sites you can select either Custom Settings or Default Level. The Default level puts the slider at the High setting.

My question is at the High setting you are not able to see certain things on some websites like Active X. If set at Custom and set at Medium the active X warning goes away.  I would like to know what is the most desireable setting for Restricted Sites. Is Medium to risky? What do most users have there's set at?

Thanks..............

Restricted sites is just that, sites you don't trust very much but need to visit for some reason, this setting will only affect sites that have been added to "restricted sites" by using the "sites" button, and does not affect normal browsing of other sites not in the list.

"Internet" is the one that should be set to medium, which is default, is it?

Yes all others are set to medium.  The Restricted Sites slider when set to High does seem to affect good sites that run Active X. If I move the slider to Medium I no longer get the warning bar on top of the page of these known good websites. But yet I would think lowering this setting may lower my protection on known bad websites.

My thought was by having it in High was an overkill so to speak????

For your convenience, Medium is fine, however your protection online also depends on what type of realtime monitoring you are using other than anti-virus. Spywareblaster? WinPatrol? Malwarebytes Anti-Malware or Super Anti-Spyware? A browser add-on such as TrendProtect or SiteAdvisor? How about SiteHound? You don't need all of them, but a couple would help with your concern regarding bad known websites. Of course, your best protection is the person sitting in the chair behind the computer.

"Of course, your best protection is the person sitting in the chair behind the computer." I couldn't agree with that more as a general rule.

But like what was said, setting the slider to High DOES affect known good sites that do run active X. Not everything will run on a page like that. The active X thingy is what is at issue here not a site that is added to the list. Lowering or raising the level of tolerance in active X can affect all websites.

This active X thingy is not what the original question was actually about. What do most users have theirs set at????
