Internet won't automatically connect

Hi,

I bought my mom (80yrs old) an Inspiron 530 with Vista Premium.  She has ATT DSL and a 2Wire router(?).  When she turns it on it doesn't automatically connect to the internet.  I figured out if the world isn't showing on the internet computers down in the right task bar she has to right click it and select connect.  I use XP so Vista is new to me.  Is there a setting or something I can put in the start up programs so it will connect right away?  I talked to her and I'm not sure if she's still having problems getting on with using the right click to connect or she's not doing it right.

More info.....She's been talking to ATT a lot.  They're sending splitters or filters?  The last ATT lady said she has to put these filters on each of her phone lines?  And that will let her connect.  The ATT lady said she's getting on the internet through a wireless neighbor.... I don't think so!  Her computer doesn't have wireless.  What's ATT talking about?

Another problem she has with the internet (I'll ask here, cause I'm already here and don't know what forum to ask it in) is with her hotmail account.  She can't get in, even with her old computer she had this problem.  I think it was when windows changed to the LIVE thing.  We click on her hotmail link and it says something about cookies.  Then if I click the link again it sometimes comes up.  Anyone know about this situation?  I searched Dell Forum for hotmail & cookies and found one from 2005 and will try it the next time I go over.

You don't have both Vista and Trend Firewalls turned on?  This could cause some weird occurences.

Has the cookie/email problem been resolved.

Thanks to all who are sticking with me.  I think I'm narrowing it down.

It seems to be that the internet DOESN'T **NOT** connect,  it just taking a very long time to connect and we haven't been patient.

After the Vista finishes loading up (at least it looks like it's done) - the internet connection icon is white w/ a red X.  I waited I'm sure several minutes and it changed to the blue computer connection icon (maybe because I got impatient and moved (not clicked) the mouse - so maybe it's a hardware conflict.) Then waited a couple more minutes and the globe/world finally showed up on the connection icon meaning it is connected.  Did you follow that?

So now what/how can I check what is taking so long?  It seems like something is going on in the background, because if I right click the connection icon and try to select connect the diaglog box hangs on the screen and won't go away and I can't click anything else.

I thought I would try plugging the mouse, etc. into diff plugs.  What do you think?

This is a Dell Desktop Inspiron 530 w/ Vista Premium.

Christine,

I'm still monitoring this thread... but since I don't use vista, I regret that I'm not in a position to offer any more concrete suggestions at this point.   it certainly does sound strange...

What you are saying is the the two computer monitor icons in the bottom right have an x of them when you turn the pc on?  After loading, for what seems too long, the globe appears over the two monitor icons, and then you can open the internent?

If so, from my experience, the extended load time is normal under Vista.  My work pc, with XP SP2, has 512MB Memory, and Pentinum 3 processor.  My home pc, with Vista Business SP1, has 2 GB of Memory and AMD Athlon Duo processor.  My work PC boots faster upon initial start-up.  It is my understanding that Vista is a large process, and although 1GB is the minimum recommended requirement it is not effecient to optimally run the program.

I have the same situation when I access my pc.  The two monitor icons (network) appear with an x and then after a minute or two the network is active (a globe appearing over the two monitors).  Not sure if this is any help?

OK  just to close this thread.....my mother kept calling ATT.  Then last week her modem lights didn't work.  ATT sent out a very nice fellow.  I wasn't there, I wish I had been to get the scoop.  It sounds like she had phone line problems comming in.  And also he said there was a conflict because the person she had set up the Dell put Mozilla on it, but she is always using IE7 and they were both trying to connect?

I don't understand how Mozilla could conflict w/ the connection since she wasn't getting a connection before she even tried to open IE.

The ATT guy said told her to wait like 5min when she turns on the pc just like I told her it was slow.  But I bought her another 1gb memory.  So that should help.  Maybe I'll let you know if that speeds it up.
