 Had you a floopy , you could boot from it too.

Been looking it up and you are right. Supposed to Start from Windows CD, Start Recovery Console, and then use Bootcfg.exe to rebuild Boot.ini.  It then says I need to know the manufacturer's configuration to put in there. Unfortunately, I am a relative novice+have no idea what the Dell cfg is...

 Maybe  you shutdowned the computer in unnomal way cause the problem, some boot files are spoiled .

you could boot  from cd -rom with your XP cd, then modify the system by the instruction of the cd.

Hi, I finally did. Got instructions via email. Only problem is the instructions start out advising me to contact the manufactor of the computer for information on how to configure to start from the CD-ROM.  I thought the manufactor was Dell...
