ip configuration for wireless adaptor
I have a Netgear wireless card. The adaptor appears in the device manager and status is that it is working properly. It does not appear in the ip configuration window.

If you go to Start > Run and type winipcfg and click OK, the ip configuration window will come up and it will likely have PPP connector displayed in the small box. If you hit the arrow button next to the box, is your wireless adapter listed as one of the choices?

On your desktop, right click on Netowork Neighborhood and select Properties from the drop-down menu. On the Configuration tab, look in the box of installed components. Is the wireless adapter listed there? If not, click on the button to Add a component, click on Adapter, and see if you can add the wireless adapter there. If so, you may also need to add the TCP/IP protocol and make sure that it is bound to the wireless adapter.

I'm sorry. The TCP-IP is showing. I've done what you're referring to and it didn't help. I've troubleshot this with a lot of people and feel kind of hopeless. I keep hoping that someone will know something someone else didn't. It's hard for me to explain everything that I've already done because I'm not that computer savvy but I can more easily recognize that something has been done when I see it described.
Thanks,
Sonya

This will take a few days if you don't answer with some detailed information! Is the tcp/ip protocol bound to the wireless network adapter? In other words, if you look through the list of installed components, is there is listing that says TCP/IP-> xxx? (Substitute the name of your wireless network adapter for xxx).
If so, and it's stil not showing up in winipcfg, then I suggest that you remove the wireless network adapter from Device Manager, reboot, reinstall the drivers for the adapter, then check everything again.

Which model computer do you have? Have your tried swapping the wireless network adapter around with another PCI card in the PCI slots. Older model computers sometime have trouble with IRQ sharing. It's supposed to work, but in older models it sometimes does not.

I have a Latitude LS. The service tag is 8V7F601. I also have an Inspiron 8200 with xp. The PCI card works in the Inspiron 8200. Neither PCI card (I have one for each computer) works in the Latitude. Both work in the Inspiron. The problem is either with the Win 98 SE operating system or the computer model or both. The card is supposed to be able to work with Win 98 SE. The Latitude had previously been on dial up. It can connect to the cable modem through a direct cable. I called a Microsoft person at 2pm yesterday and that person spent four hours getting it to do that. By the time that occurred, we were so tired, both of us had forgotten the original reason for my call. I called Microsoft back and got someone else, who told me to call Netgear. I had already called Netgear twice (maybe three times) but I called them again. They told me to call Microsoft. I called Microsoft. By this time, it was 11pm. Stayed on with Microsoft until 1am. This person called Netgear. Netgear struggled again for half an hour. Told me to call Dell. I had already called Dell two or three times. Called Dell at 9am this morning. Transferred, held, transferred, held, finally got first person I had spoken with at Dell. This person recommended upgrading to xp. I had previously tried (the first time he suggested this) and had run into problems. I told him about these problems. He started guiding me through the process. At 12:25, he said the last process initiated would take 35-40 minutes. He gave me a phone number and case number and told me to call back when I had finished this process. I called back at 1:05pm. Held, transferred, held transferred. Told this story to someone at about 3pm. This person said he would take my name and number and have the original person call me back. Now waiting to be called back. Trying to solve problem while waiting.
Thanks,
Sonya

Now knowing that the computer in question is a Latitude laptop computer, my suggestion in my previous reply does not apply to your computer. I think that you have a PC card, rather than a PCI card. Is it a card that slides into a slot on the side of the laptop? If so, it is a PC card. PCI cards are larger cards that go in one of several slots inside of a desktop computer.
You might save yourself a lot of trouble if you can return the PC card and get a different brand. I think you are right that there is some kind of incompatibility between the card and either the computer or the Windows 98 operating system. Sorry I couldn't have been of more help.

So long as the new card uses the same protocol (802.11b or 802.11b/g depending on the which model router you have) that the other cards and router use, then it should work. I have much less experience with laptops than I do desktops, but I've always had great success with Linksys products.

Do you have any recommendations for a different brand? Would a different brand work with the router and card that came in the starter kit that is currently working fine in the Inspiron?
Thank you,
Sonya
