Is this recoverable ?

My sister (Dimension 4550) had an important Word file she created, she thinks under her husband's user name. She's a newbie and her husband doesn't use the computer but at Setup she put his name and her 3 kids' names. Last week I was doing some maintenance on it. Asked her if any work had been done in any of the other users' names. She said no and she gave me the go ahead to delete the other 4 users. I had her re-create an account using the same (husband's) user name. She couldn't find the 'important' doc file but there were a few that shouldn't have found their way into this account, ie a Word file attachment that I forwarded to her via email.

Question: Is there any recovering this file ? (Computer has been shutdown/restarted numerous times since last access of file.)

For my interest (not important): How did this other account act as backup partition in relation to those "few" docs that do show up in the re-created account ?

PS Works 2003

If there was a lot of I/O activity on the disk right after it's deleted, GOOD LUCK. Someone with good tools like those data recovery specialists can get it, but you'll get iffy results with software recovery tools.

But, run them anyways and see what you get. I don't know any free ones right off the bat, so look around on Google.

Thanks. I re-enacted what I did on her system. I forgot that when you delete a user you have the option to delete that user's files or not. I did so I think that's pretty much the end of the story. I have some of those recovery programs saved but I don't think I'm up to it. Live and learn. ta
