Because he wanted to make sure all sensitive data was deleted, a reformat doesn't delete data completely.

why didn't you simply wipe the hard drive and reinstall the OS?

I agree with the subject title.

However, it's partly your fault. You left the car running with

the key in the ignition. Dealing with Geek Squad  is asking for it.

And a factory restore is better how?

Then dell should not have insisted that I go to them and give me the tools I needed to correct this issue myself.  if the factory image was faulty, it was useless.
