I haven't looked at Java specifically but there are many features that are purposely disabled or not implemented in the Beta versions.  You have to remember it's not a full feature or final production version - it is a "test" version and there will be bugs, items disabled, etc.

With the contention between MS and Sun over Java implementation it wouldn't surprise me to see it not supported in the beta version.

I've tried two different beta versions and dumped both of them because of features that were not implemented or disabled.

Microsoft has a list of items disabled or not implemented in thie beta versions.  I seem to remember seeing a bug list too.

No problem here with Sun Java and IE 7 beta 2 (current build 5346.5).

A couple of days ago I uninstalled  JRE 1.5.0_06 (which had been working fine with IE 7 beta 2) and installed 1.5.0_07 without problems. Also working fine.

So that is definitely not one of the disabled features (in fact I don't know of any disabled features in IE7 beta 2; there are some changes, by design, from IE6).

Can you check in IE, tools, internet options, advanced tab, whether Sun Java is listed, if so is it ticked?

Also you could check control panel, Java applet (steaming coffee cup), Java tab, Java Application Runtime settings, click view,  see that both user and system tabs show enabled checked. Also in advanced tab, click + next to tag support and see that IE is checked.

Otherwise, I suggest you uninstall Sun Java, get and install latest version (IMO always best to uninstall old versions first, as they don't overwrite).

download JRE 5.0 update 7.

I find that downloading the offline installation file and installing from hard drive works best. After install, you can test your installation from
http://www.java.com/en/download/manual.jsp (click verify installation)

You have to enable the javaconsole add-on in the add-on list. Tools-menue > manage add-on list. (You get the drop down menues by pressing the Alt-key.
