Update

I am now in a right mess!!

Since installing the most recent version of sun JAVA I found that internet explorer kept on crashing.  I therefore did a system restore to a restore point earlier on in the day before I updated JAVA.  (note - the previous version of JAVA was not working, but wasn't crashing).

The restore system thing seemed to go OK, but now if I enter any website with JAVA on it, microsoft explorer instantly closes down.  I have been unable to go onto the Java website at all since it contains Java material and is so causing IE to shut.

Any help would now be greatly appreacialted!

Jon,

I doubt if my problem / solution is the same as yours, but it may give food for thought.

Recently I uploaded a list of AGNIS sites via ProWagon into NIS 2005, in the Ad-Blocking section.  This has the advantage of blocking a lot of the annoying ads that plague many websites.

After doing so, Java based websites and also Windows Update stopped working, foxnews videos, etc., as they were somehow included on the ad block list!  Was able to "uncheck" ad blocking in Norton's and everything stopped working.

The difference I see is that you are shutting down if you type java.  That didn't happen to me....I would suggest a thorugh virus / worm check to be sure.

(To come to my conclusion, though, although the answer was simple at the end, I did end up doing a complete reinstall anyway, just to make sure everything was clean.)

Good luck!
