In Firefox address bar, type about : plugins without space on either side of colon, and then enter. If Java is installed in Firefox, it will be listed. If not, then you must not have selected to install into Firefox as the Java download was installing.
Go to Java, download the installer, close Firefox and install. Select to install the plugin for Firefox when asked on the installer. There are instructions on Java site to install online or offline.

I entered what you recommended. That is neat !

An older version Java Plug-in 1.3.1_08 is showing installed 4x.

The latest and greatest Java Plug-in 1.5.0_04 is showing installed 5x.

All of the above Enabled : Yes   I suppose from me uninstall / reinstall trying to remedy the problem.

I then did a Win file search and there were 22 Java files, \Program Files\ java version\plugins\bin  etc. All applications.

I'm thinking of deleting all of the files assoc with these plug ins from the Win file search I did after getting the info from about:plugins.

Question ? Can I also delete the oldest version 1.3.1_08 and still have Java oper capability ? When trying to delete this file, a prompt advises that some programs may not work...... I suppose it's telling me I m about to delete all of my Java capability. Do I need Java capability ? I think not. I will then go to the Java / Sun link you have provided. (I m familiar with that non Java page) and download the latest version of Java. I

I would hope that the result would be that only the latest version of Java Plug in 1.5.0_04 will be showing in - about : plugins and Win file search ? This may result in fixing the problem, conflict and allow the Firefox browser to remain open upon accessing a Java based website ?

I also have done a back up to a hd file if I need to restore.

Any addl input or guidance ?
