Java Update Installs successfully but Internet Explorer has problems with Java content

I went online last night after work, and immediately noticed some issues with my browser.  I have Windows 7 Home Premium edition, and a 64-bit operating system.  I am running Internet Explorer 9 and have all required and recommended Windows updates installed.

I went to the official Java home page, clicked on the download button, selected run, and completed install successfully.  However, when I ran the test applet, nothing happened.  I then manually installed the 64-bit version.  Same problem.  I removed the older version(s).  No luck.

I removed all versions and started over.  I even tried turning off my McAfee firewall.  I completed the 32 bit online install, and the 64-bit offline download again.  The installs completed, but no luck with the test applet.  I viewed some favorites and quickly realized many pages include Java content.  I cannot use IE right now for my Facebook page, or to check my Yahoo! e-mail, or even request technical support.

My only salvation for now is that I have an older version of Firefox installed.  Guess what?  I go to the Java home page, run the test applet, and it's all good.  I start pulling up my Favorites using the Firefox browser, and suddenly no more problems viewing content and navigating.

My hope is that all I need to do is adjust some setting(s) for Internet Explorer, but could not identify a solution after reviewing Java Help Center options.

I have run into problems with Java updates in the past, which were reported in the Action Center, and until last night was able to resolve the issues on my own.  I am really stumped this time, as Java does work with Firefox, and there are no issues reported in the Action Center.

Hi FJHauck,

  • Please check if Java is enabled in Add-ons. Go to Internet explorer Tools>> select Manage Add-ons.  Please ensure that Java is enabled in Tool-bars and Extensions. If Java is disabled, right-click it and enable it.

  • Run the Windows 7 troubleshooter for Internet Safety and Performance. To find this troubleshooting step, go to Start>>Control Panel>> select 'View By' 'Small Icons>>select 'Troubleshooting'>> click 'View All'>> select 'Internet Explorer Performance and 'Internet Explorer Safety'.
  • If this does not work, Go to Start>> type 'Cmd' in the search box>> right-click  'cmd.exe'>> select 'Run as Administrator'.  When the windows appears, type 'regsvr32 jscript.dll' and press Enter. Then, type 'regsvr32 vbscript.dll' and press Enter. Please refer to the image.

Hope this helps.

Do write back with the findings.

I confirmed that Java is enabled in tool bars and extensions.  However, my troubleshooting options do not seem to include Internet Explorer, as illustrated in your second screen shot.

I am not brave enough to attempt your last suggestion.

This screen shot confirms that Java is enabled in tool bars and extensions.

Thank you for the response.

If you are not comfortable performing this step, you can also run these two fix-it solutions:

http://support.microsoft.com/mats/ie_freezes_or_crashes/

http://support.microsoft.com/mats/ie_performance_and_safety/

Click on 'Run Now' >> click 'Run' on security warning>> click 'Run' again.

Once done, please run these fix-it solutions.

If this does not work, you can uninstall Internet explorer 9  and Internet explorer 8 will be installed. If it works on Internet explorer 8, you can re-install IE9 which you will also find in Windows Updates.

To uninstall IE9, go to Control Panel>> Programs and Features>> click 'View Installed Updates> look for Microsoft Internet Explorer 9 and uninstall it. Once done, reboot PC. Once IE8 is installed, check if the Java applet works. Then,  IE9 will be automatically installed through the WIndows Updates.

Do write back with the findings.

Glad to be of help.

I phoned Dell support and spoke with rep who made remote connection to my computer.  He suggested rolling back Internet Explorer, but he also advised having "Java Run Time" professionally installed. I noticed that System Mechanic is not working properly either now.  I run the program and it shows initializing system status but never displays actual status.  The display resembles what Java shows when I attempt to verify installation using Internet Explorer.

I do have warranty coverage for customer care and technical support, but was advised that software troubleshooting is NOT covered.  I am not a fan of dealing with 1-800 INDIA anyhow, but really do not appreciate what seems to be a new policy.  I have owned other Dell computers but never been pressured into purchasing software coverage.

My concern now is that taking the time to uninstall Internet Explorer 9 on my own will not fix the real problem, based on what the phone support rep indicated.  Let me know if there are any other support options available.

I think my best choice might be simply replacing the hard drive, if you can provide one with the same "image" as the original factory shipment.  I spent a lot of money for your top of the line model, and if this issue cannot be resolved, it will be the last time I ever order a computer from Dell.

Thank you for the response.

I understand that this issue has been troublesome.

Hard drive replacement is not required. You can certainly restore the computer to factory settings(PC restore).

Note: PC restore will lead to data( pictures, documents, programs, music) loss. Please perform a data backup prior to this step. Please disconnect any external peripherals as well.

To perform PC restore:

  1. Restart PC, press 3-4 times when the Dell logo appears.
  2. The Advanced Boot Options menu will appear, select Repair your Computer and press Enter.
  3. Specify the language settings that you want, and then click Next.
  4. Log in as a user who has administrative credentials, and then click OK.
  5. Choose a Recovery Tool Window will appear, select Dell Data Safe Restore and Emergency Backup.
  6. The next window will show 2 options;Restore computer and preserve my new or changed files and Select other System Backup and more options. Select the second option(Select other System Backup and more options) and click Next.
  7. The next window shows these options: Restore my computer and Backup Files and folders. Select 'Restore my  computer'.
  8. Select Factory Image restore and click Next.
  9. A prompt will appear stating that data will be erased and if you would like to continue, click Yes
  10. PC restore will initiate.Once done, click Restart.
  11. Follow the onscreen instructions to enter the user account information.

I have some questions after reviewing the article you referenced.  Do the external peripherals to be removed include the cable modem?  How about the Bose speakers which shipped with my desktop?

I am also concerned about step four and the last step which refer to user account information.  I am the only user but not sure what information must be entered.  I do not want to run into a roadblock due to a password issue.

What will happen to my current McAfee subscription if I successfully restore software to original factory condition?

Please note that the Dell Data Safe Local Backup program is not active and will not install on my computer.

Thank you for the response.

The cable modem and the speakers have to be disconnected.
In step 4, select your username from the drop-down list. If you do not use a password to log on to windows, leave the password field blank, click OK. In the last step, it prompts to create a new user account. If you want to use a password, create one. If not, you can skip the step.

If the McAfee subscription was registered online, you need to visit http://www.mcafee.com/us/ .Sign in to your McAfee account>>Enter your email address and the password used at the time of account registration. If you do not remember your password, click 'Forgot your password'>>Enter your email address>> the password reset link will be sent to your email address>> click the password reset link>> create a new password>>download the McAfee subscription.

If the Dell Data Safe Local Backup program is not installed on your computer, I can help you install it as well after the PC Restore.

Hope this helps.
Please reply if you have any questions.

Please explain when it's safe to re-connect the cable modem to my computer.  I am looking for a detailed step by step list or another knowledge base article covering how to get set up and start over after restoring the factory image.

Thank you for the response.

When you restart the computer after the PC restore is finished, the following options will appear (Refer to the images).

Hereafter, enter the time and date settings, enter the username and password(optional). Follow the onscreen instructions to complete the initial setup. Once, the desktop screen appears, connect the cable modem and speakers. Once, the pc restore is successful, all of the factory installed applications will be available. If the system was shipped with MS Office starter, it will be pre-installed.  If the system was shipped with MS Office Home and Student, you will need the product key to activate it which was sent along with the computer.

Please reply if you have any questions.
