Java Update Problem

Question

Hello I am new here and have a  new recent buy from Dell Dimension E310 Windows XP Home Version 2002 Service pack 2....Dell installed my Java Version 1.5.0.60-b05 and  when I go to the Java site and download (i'm on a phone line MSN) I get this message below.I have read several posts about this on this forum and I am reluctant to uninstall my Java I have as I am an eBay seller and I don't want to risk messing up my ability to list on ebay (the catagory selector is a 'click to activate Java function') so anyway here is a copy paste of the message I end up with when I attempt to update.This is my first post and Thanks for any help :-):smileyhappy: .  (But The ActiveX Control message NEVER appears to me tho.)     We encountered an issue while trying to automatically install Java software onto your machine. If you encounter an error, check the top of the browser (see image above) for a yellow bar that reads 'This site might require the following ActiveX control: J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 9 from 'Sun Microsystems, Inc.'. Click here to install...' Click the yellow bar and choose 'Install ActiveX Control...' to allow installation to proceed.

You may safely go ahead with the java update, including it's activeX control.  Actually java 6.0 is now available, but the latest 5.0 version is 1.5.0 update 10.  The information bar pops up due to how your web zone security settings are configured.  One more thing...when updating java to newer versions, go back and uninstall older versions from control panel add/remove programs.  Message Edited by obx1 on 12-18-200604:00 PM

To add to the above, it is best to uninstall existing Java version through control panel add/remove before installing the new one. The install of the new ne does not overwrite the previous one, so both remai installed,which may lead to confusion as to which one is actually being used.

At Last it is DONE/installed the  java 1.5.0 (build 1.5.0_10-b03) Thanks to all for your help.What worked for me was I went to www.java.com  and selected manual download and followed the prompts. Now it is done . Wonder if I should uninstall the older Java now from Control/remove etc etc?   Thanks again for the interest and help :-)   amusicfan
