Java Update

I don't seem to be having much luck updating Java. According to Add/Remove Programs what I have installed is Java 2 Runtime Enviroment, SE v 1.4.2_03. Belarc Advisor does not list it by version. From what I have read I need to completely delete the old version first, so I tried to download the version that installs offline, which is about 13 megs and change. The version that installs while you are online has a download about half that size.

Anyway...when I attempt to download the larger version the progress bar goes up green for about 4 spaces and then just sits there. When I tried to back out I find the page is frozen and I have to do a Task Manager restart. I did a Internet Explorer browser reset earlier today, but I was having a problem with some pages freezing before that, like the NWS radar loops, which are run by Java, so don't have any idea if the all lockups are caused by the same problem. I didn't notice any ActiveX alerts on the Java site because of the browser reset, which puts everything back to where it was set when it was shipped.

So I was wondering if there is a simple solution to getting this downloaded like an alternate site, or should I try again and download the short version. I had pretty much the same problem a few weeks ago when I tried to update Java.

Dale

whether true or myth, 1.4.2_03 is the java version most often "blamed" for allowing Vundo infections to sneak through... so it's really important for you to get rid of that one as soon as possible.

the java link i have is:
offline version, 13.92 Meg
I've not had any problems there... is this the link you've been trying?

Hi David:

Yeah...that's the one, I'll try again tomorrow  and just let it sit for a long time. Maybe it is loading some preliminary files. Have the the same problem with the Trend Micro scanner...probably an artifact of being on dialup. I am just about ready to go with Qwest to speed things up a bit...can't live in the cave forever.

Thought the browser reset might get rid of the Dell Forums failure to save the sign in problem...which is just a minor annoyance. It won't save for any length of time now...maybe 10-15 minutes tops.

I sure hope you'll be successful this time.

one of the advantages of the larger, offline version is that, once downloaded, it'll stay around (unless you delete it) for RE-installation at any future time.
so let me ask:   have you successfully downloaded [and still have installation packages for] ANY version(s) of java newer than 1.4.2_03?  the point being, i think you'd be better/safer with any version of java later than 1.4.2_03... even if it's not the most current one... but of course, the most current one would be the safest/best of all.

Nope...don't ever remember updating this program at all. Don't think I have ever updated Adobe Reader or that Flash Player or whatever it is either. I have been good about seeing to it that my security programs are updated daily though. Will try to get this thing downloaded and installed sometime this weekend or early next.

Well...I have tried twice today to get it to download, but it quickly fills up 4 of the green rectangles on the progress bar and then just sits there. The first time earlier today the system finally said it couldn't find the file...but I was able to download (not sure what I did) a 373 KB file (jre.6u3-windows-i586-p-iftw.exe)  which I believe is the file that does the online install of the smaller file, so I will try that next. On the second attempt today I gave up after 25 minutes.

Some other Java observations:
In Add/Remove Programs the file size for the older version mentioned above post shows 136 MB...that seems awfully huge.

In the Control Panel the "Java Plug In" doesn't bring up the Java Control Panel anymore. I did a browser reset a few days ago, but not sure if that had anything to do with it. I also created a Restore Point before I did that, but don't know if browser reset can be reversed.

In Belarc Advisor there are entries  for javaw.exe and javaws.exe, but no version number.

Right above the dark blue line at bottom of the screen that contains the tray and Start Button is a lite blue line or border that says "signed in online" and sometimes a little icon will come up there that is shaped like a gear, and if I remember correctly, has a red slash going through it. It is not there all the time but is labled "Plug In Manager". Not sure how to bring it up again or if the Java Control Panel has been disabled by the browser reset and perhaps restoreable by making the right selection in Plug In Manager.

So like I said earlier, I will attempt the Online Install version tomorrow...not sure if I need to activate the small 373 KB file before attempting to download. Any encouragement appreciated.

Sorry, I was trying to save you a couple off clicks.
Try this one:

Click on downloadn next to Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 3 (4th one down)

then you'll get to the page I meant.

The layest java runtime is this one:

Agree to the license, then download the first download (for off line installation).
Save the file to some convenient folder on your hard drive.

Use Control panel/add/remove to uninstall the version you now have.
Double click on the file you downloaded to install the latewst java.

Different looking page to load from, but the same story....shows about 4 loading bars then stops. After about a half hour got a message that the file cannot be located. Weird... I did not use the Sun Download Manager, don't know if that would have made a difference. I don't have trouble downloading stuff, not sure why this file is so stubborn. Will try the shorter version tomorrow.

Chas,

just wondering:   what is the point (and emphasis!) of(/on) your instruction to
" Delete the downloaded installation file after completing the above procedure Exclamation"
... unless your goal is to reclaim the almost 14 Meg of disk space used by this file ???
Is there something else that I'm missing here?
It's not like the installation file will automatically reinstall itself, if you leave it around.

in fact, [since free disk space is not an issue on any of my PCs], I always make it a point to hold onto my downloaded installation files... i keep them all together in a single directory... so that, IF ever something happened, and I needed to reinstall a program, I'd already have a copy of it available.   Keep in mind that Dale is currently using dial-up, so it's frustrating enough to have to download something once.

furthermore, by saving//keeping the file on one machine, it allows me to transfer it to any other machine at a later date... which now reminds me:

Dale:

Do you have access to any other machine ---- a friend's, or one at work --- with a faster (DSL/cable) connection, onto which you can download the installation file, and then, transfer it via memory stick [or CD R/W] to your machine???

Are you hitting save when when you download.
Could be your AV or Firewall is blocking it
See if this helps

  • Open an Internet Explorer (only) window and go to http://www.java.com/en/download/manual.jsp > In the middle of the page, click on the Arrow button to the left of Windows XP/Vista/2000/2003 - Offline > If the IE Information Bar pop-ups up, right-click on it and say it's OK to display the blocked content.

2 da HandYou do not have to install the Java Web Start ActiveX Control

  • Accept the license agreement > Click on Windows (XP,Vista, .etc) Offline Installation, Multi-language and Save the file jre-6u3-windows-i586-p-s.exe to your desktop; do not Run it.
  • When the download is complete, close all browser windows and double-click on the saved file to install the update.
  • Delete the downloaded installation file after completing the above procedure and reboot if not prompted to do so. Or not.  It's up to you.
  • Open Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs:

    • Uninstall anything that says Sun Java, Java JRE, or similar except Java TM 6 Update 3 which you just installed.
    • Close Add/Remove Programs.

  • In Windows Explorer, navigate to C:\Program Files\Java <=this folder, if found. Delete any subfolders except the subfolder jre1.6.0_03 which was just created by the installation above.

2 da HandDo NOT delete C:\Program Files\JavaVM <=this folder, if found!

I had those instuctions saved in a folder. They came from another forum that
deals with security. I see your point. I'll change the post. It's not a big deal.

The saga  continues....:smileyindifferent:

Since the small installation file downloaded OK I went online and then clicked on it and I got through the welcome screen and accepted the license screen and then it started to download. Again, it got to a certain point and then I got an error box which of course I failed to write down the details of. It doesn't seem like my computer or security products are blocking this, in fact ZA asked for permission to allow it which I granted...its like there is some kind  connection problem with accessing the core files. I will try again today or tomorrow if I can find time, and will also check my other computer and see if the same problems exist with it and see if I can the file copied onto a disk there. My dialup is slow which I have learned to tolerate (not for much longer though :smileymad: ) but this is getting ridiculous. Stay tuned for the latest chapter of this sorry story.  :smileytongue:

May not make a difference. Try my link, it goes directly to the download.
Good luck

Fired up my trusty Dell 4600 and went to the download page. A few quick clicks and the larger file is in the process of downloading.  The 4600 had no Java at all that I can find, yet the weather radar loops used to work fine. I think they changed their website because the looping doesn't work now. I've got to leave shortly after the download will finish, so will see if I can't load this onto a CD and get over to the 8400 and also install it here. I am about to donate the 8400 to charity! I still think it has something to do with my MSN browser. This 4600 stays signed into the Dell Forums but the 8400 doesn't. Later....
