Java versus Windows XP Internet Explorer - Dell Dimension XPS R450
After successfully upgrading my machine from 98 to xp, I noticed that java apps would no longer run in internet explorer. No problem, I thought. I knew of the battles between Sun and Microsoft. So I just popped over to the sun site and downloaded java. I rebooted, made sure the java box was checked under tools>internet options>advanced and rebooted again. Still no java! I looked in the java control box to make sure I set up for internet explorer. After a couple of hours of poking around, I gave up.
I then searched for alternative browsers.
I downloaded and installed Opera since it had java already in it. Opera worked with Java apps right out of the box. To compare the look, opened up internet explorer to some of the same pages. It looked the same.
Good.
So on a lark, I opened up a web page with java apps in internet explorer.
I don't believe it! After installing Opera, Java was now working in Internet Explorer!
Things that make ya go hmmm...
ANY IDEAS ON HOW THIS HAPPENED?

Another place to check in IE
Go to Tools -> Options
Click the Security Tab, and then click the Custom Level button near the bottom.
A new Security Settings Window will appear; scroll down to end and look for Java permissions. Ensure that there is no checkmark beside 'disable Java'. I have mine set to Prompt

Thank you for your input.
Took it all the way down to enable java scripting and low safety on java permission.
Still nothing.
Funny thing though...
I would get a picture icon (small square, circle & triangle in a tranparent square)in the upper left hand corner of where the java app box was drawn. Not the java coffee cup icon.
Hmmm...
All I know is that when I down loaded opera (with java), all of sudden internet explorer finaaly was able to run java apps.
