Hi Flooby. Thanks for your response. I did what you suggested, and can confirm that I have Java Version 5.00.3810 on my system. So are you suggesting that I have the box next to Java (Sun) checked off, in my Advanced options? Would I not need that on to run an applet?
I'll do that now, delete the temorary Internet files, and try again
I just configured a flight plan and was allowed to proceed through the steps without issue. Do you actually have the MS VM installed on your system? If so, you probably don't even need the Sun software on there. I can't recall ever seeing such a message with the MS VM, and as such, am inclined to think it might be a problem with Sun, or a conflict between the two java tools, but this is just a guess. If I was experiencing similar issues and needed to use the site, and if I had the MS VM installed, I'd probably try uninstalling Sun, clearing the temporary internet files, and trying again.
If you need to verify that you have the MS VM installed, go to Start - Run, type cmd, and at the command prompt, type jview and press Enter. If the MS VM is installed, you'll get version details to confirm this, similar to this:
C:\Documents and Settings\(User Name)>jview Microsoft (R) Command-line Loader for Java Version 5.00.3810 Copyright (C) Microsoft Corp 1996-2000. All rights reserved.
Hello again. I tried it again, with no luck. Even more frustrating, I cannot get the site to work in Netscape 7.0, or the latest version of Mozilla. All return the same "javascript:adjustPaxNum()" line in the status bar. I wonder if I might have a virus or spyware. Any further suggestions? Thank you - Randy
Are your anti virus definitions up to date? Have you run a system scan for viruses? Those would be the first things to check, but I doubt that a virus is involved. Junkware is a possibility, and should always be considered as one of the first suspects, and ruled out before posting an issue. We have no way of knowing what you might have installed, and that's going to be your responsibility to investigate. We can provide educated (and sometimes not so educated) guesses, based on experience with systems we know to be free of viruses/junkware, but that's about the best one can hope for.
I don't even have the Sun software installed on 4 out of the 5 systems I have here, and have never missed it. If you have the MS VM installed, you shouldn't need it to "run an applet," if you mean view an applet. I don't. I'm also not certain that merely unchecking it in Advanced options is going to prevent it from conflicting with the MS VM, which is why I'd probably uninstall it, rather than hoping that unchecking something would adequately disable it. You can always reinstall it later, if uninstalling makes no difference.
The thought occurs to me that what you're experiencing might be happening as a result of the particular flight selections you've made, rather than as the result of a general, site-wide glitch, so you might also want to try some different configurations (both destination and point of origin), to rule out the possibility that the error is unique to your particular selections.
When I go to that site and enter minimal information on the opening screen I also get the same message displayed in the status bar. However, when I click the "Go" button the site takes me into the next screen to make more selections. Have you tried going beyond the opening screen or did you stop when the error was displayed?
Hi Paindoc. I checked my Norton Internet Security settings. My firewall is configured to allow Java Applets. So that doesn't seem to be the problem.
Thank you for the suggestion.
Hi Denny. When I click the "Go" button, nothing happens. I can't get beyond the opening screen - I click the mouse, there is no response. This is where I am stuck. I even turned off my firewall to see if that would make any difference, and it didn't.
Hi Flooby. I ran a full system virus scan using Norton, the definitions are up to date, and no virus was found.
When I check "Add or Remove Programs", the only two with Java listed are: 1) Java 2 Runtime Environment, SE v1.4.0
and
2) Java Web Start
Do you think I should remove one of these two programs?
I also tried different booking configurations (different cities, flights, etc.), and still couldn't get it to work. As mentioned earlier, the site will not work in Netscape or Mozilla either, which is why I think I might have a larger problem.
Netscape and Mozilla depend on the Java 2 Runtime Environment and Java Web Start to do their things properly. That's all part of the Sun package, and this may be an indication that there's a problem related to it. Being as how it's easily to reinstall, that's why I suggested completely uninstalling those items, doing a disk cleanup, and then attempting to access the site using IE and the MS VM. Assuming your VM is intact and working properly, the site should work OK, and you'll have minimized the possibility that one of those Sun components is interacting with the VM and causing problems.
Once again, this assumes that everything else is in order. Since you haven't mentioned running a scan for junkware (I'd try running AdAware, and letting it remove anything it finds), that may be another possibility, but that too is easy to remedy.
Good morning, Flooby. I uninstalled Java 2 RE and Java Web Start as per your suggestion. It made no difference, still can't make Jetsgo work. The reason the programs are on my system is to allow me to access certain functions of CHEMnetBASE, a db produced by CRC Press, which I use in my job as an engineering librarian. CnB includes the Handbook of Chemistry and Physics. As you mentioned, the software can be easily reinstalled, and in fact, when I return to the CnB, it will reinstall itself to allow me to use the db fully.
I guess I'm running out of options. I ran HijackThis, and submitted the log to net-integration for review. I also ran SpyBot, and it found a few problems, which I allowed the program to correct.
Obviously there is a larger problem, as you confirmed, given that I'm having the same problem on Mozilla and Netscape. Weird that on Mozilla, the Jetsgo site itself keeps reloading over and over.
Ghost in the Machine? Any other ideas? In any event, I really appreciate your kind help and suggestions, many thanks for your time and help.
In Internet Explorer go to Tools|Internet Options|Security tab. Click the Custom Level button and at the bottom of the dialog that opens under Scripting see if all three entries there are set to "enable."
Hi Denny. I checked the Scripting levels, and all three were turned on.
I can report the following: a good friend who is very computer savvy checked the Jetsgo site on his computer as follows: 1) IE5 on Win98, 2) IE6 SP1 on WinXP (which I have as well), 3) IE5 on Win2000, 4) Netscape 4.8, and 5) Mozilla 1.5. In all five browsers, he was able to click on "go" successfully on the Jetsgo site. I also downloaded Netscape 4.8 to my machine, tried Jetsgo, and it wouldn't work. While trying to make the site work on my machine, I opened the Local Area Connection Status window, in order to check for packet activity. There was none, each time I tried clicking on "go". I turned off the local firewall within Network Connections, and that made no difference.
My friend's theory is that javascript on my machine may be "broken", so to speak.
I want to thank you and Flooby and paindoc for your suggestions, guidance and assistance, which is much appreciated, even though the problem remains. Thank you kindly for your help, everyone.
Short of reinstalling Windows, I don't know what else to do. And reinstalling Windows would be a bit extreme, I think.
I think I'd try reinstalling the MS VM over top of itself, and see if that corrects the problem - that's been known to work from time to time. It's a safe thing to try, and certainly easier than reinstalling Windows. If you don't have version 3810 backed up anywhere, send me a private message with an e-mail address for an account that can accept a 5+ MB file attachment, and I'll send a copy to you.
