jpeg files

Dell 2400,256 ram, XP.    On one computer I can open jpeg files using Windows picture and fax viewer,on the second computer I can.t open jpeg files. I have look up files types for both computers and check files for jpeg and both units show to open with windows picture and fax viewer. It appears as if that program is not functioning in the first computer. My Question, is where do I find Windows picture and fax viewer, and how do I test  the program.  Bud

Go to Control Panel » Folder Options » File Types tab and scroll down to jpeg. Highlite it and select change. You should have a list of programs to open that extension with. Select 'Windows picture and fax viewer' if that's what you want to open jpeg with.

chuket, I have selected windows picture and fax viewer and the jpeg pictures in attachments in outlook express still  will not open. I receive the following message " This file does not have a program associated with it for performing this action".  Under Explore/ tools/ folder options/ file type, it shows that jpeg files will open with windows picture and fax viewer.  I can,t find a stand alone program under file search, my computer, system programs. If this function is not working, how do I test for or repair. Bud

Then they are not really jpg files. They probably have another unseen extension like DAT or TXT. That's the sender's fault, not yours. Test it out by opening a known good jpg file on your own computer.

Here's the path to the viewer:

rundll32.exe %systemroot%\system32\shimgvw.dll,ImageView_Fullscreen (don't forget to include the space after "rundll32.exe") This is from a tip in PC World Magazine. Copy and paste into your Run box to test.
