Just reinstalled. Device Hardware questions.
Windows xp professional media center 2005
I just had to reinstall my Dell xps 400 after having it for a few years. I used the dell OS reinstall disk on a reformatted drive. I didnt have the dell drivers disk and have filled out the form a few times now and havent gotten any disks since the first time trying 3 months ago. So I decided to download all the drivers and such from the drivers page that it says was sent with my machine. It to me seems like everything works. But I havent done much incase I have to reinstall again.
But the problem is now after all the isntalling the device manager is saying there is an unkown device with a ? and hidden was an exclamation point on the non plug and play area for the serial spot.
So I did what I have always done and unistalled both of them and restarted the computer. All that did was get rid of the hidden one it no longer says serial nor is there a !. The only thing left is other devices with the unknown hardware. I have tried all the automated ways to install and search for drivers on disk and windows update. I have no clue what the device is. When I check the properties the only info it says about it is as follows.
Location: Microsoft ACPI-Compliant System
Details: ACPI\AWY0001\2&DABA3FF&0
I tried googling the details info and all i could was stuff about amd processors and none were on dells. I have intel. Please any and all help would be beyond appriciated. If you need more info about anything please ask and I will post as quickly as possible.

I will format and reinstall the os and try doing the drivers using those 2 first and see what happens. But I am thinking it is something else other than that since I downloaded everything dell says I need drivers for.

When you installed the drivers did you follow the proper installation order? Most of them are not critical, but at least two of them are; the first needs to be the Dell Desktop System Software, and the second needs to be the Intel Chipset Driver. Dell suggests that following these two you should install the graphics adapter, the network interface adapter, the sound adapter, and the modem (if you have one). The remainder are up to you.

Wish they would just send my replacement disks dont know why they wont I have filled out the form and requested them and have gotten the email back just no response and no disks. Can anyone here help me with this. I just want the computer to work correctly again. Thanks for the trys so far.

Hi vwyodapink, When you said you downloaded all the drivers, did you by any chance put them all on one disc. If so, put the disc in the drive, go into device manager, double click on that yellow mark. There should be an option to get driver, if so click on it, direct it to your drive. If the driver is on the Cd, it should lnstall it. I had a problem with my old machine, that the drivers would not install, so I would force the system to lift the driver off the disc.

That did not work either. I had tried it before on the last install but tried again since you brought it up. Says cant install cause there is no software. I dont know what its missing but I cant think of anything. But my best guess is it has to do with the serial plugs on the mother board. since its saying an error in non plug and play serial. But I have downloaded every driver they say shipped with my system. If the device manager codes will help anyone I can post them. Anyone other ideas?

I just did a system scan with the dell scanner and it is telling me my hard drive is IDE when its SATA II .. I have installed the sata drivers they listed already and its still showing as IDE. So that is my best guess with the problem but have no ideas on solving this. Hope someone out there can figure this out.

Hi vwyodapink, I f you go into your BIOS, are your HD showing IDE or SATA. If showing IDE, click on it and change to SATA.

I went into the bios and it says its on a sata listing but i checked it from the drop down menu and I dont even see how you can change it from IDE to SATA if i wanted. Unless I am not going into the bios right but I did the f2 button. The other thing I am thinking is with this install the only difference is the bios I updated to A07 from A06. I am wondering if I should reinstall a06 if I can find it for my system? Thanks for all your input so far. This is driving me crazy and dont want to install and set everything up till I know I am on a good install.

Incase anyone runs into this problem the way I solved it was by reinstalling a different version a more up to date one than Dell lists of Intels ViiV Quick Resume Technology. That got rid of the unknown device. The serial under non plug and play is just for serial ports for printers is the best I can figure out cause if you diable it and reboot it does not find new hardware.
