K-lite codec pack and Media Player v. 10

A Dell technical representative downloaded a K-lite Codec Pack on my machine via Dell Connect to overcome a problem in viewing DVDs inserted into my dvd player, because of a codec error message.

I have discovered now that whenever I view an on-line DVD the Windows Media Player no longer automatically appears and plays the DVD. I get Media Player Classic.

What has Dell exposed me to? How, I can I resolve the problem?

Three (3) File Types now are gray hi-lited in my Media Player. They are Windows Media file (asf), Windows Media video file (wmv) and Movie file (mpeg).

I should inform you that my system crashed and I had to install a new hard drive. Beforehand, I had no problem with my machine.

You need to re-associate those 3 file types with WMP.

Open windows explorer (not IE) and go to Tools/folder options/file associations, find those file extensions in the list. and re associate them with WMP.

If you happen to have any of these types of files on your hard drive somewhere, you can right click on one of those asf, wmv, mpeg files and select "open with" and choose WMP, tick the "always use this program to open" tick box. Hit OK this resets the file association also.

I wonder if the newer WMP got removed.
